Title: Paladin Revision?
Post by: dyjoots on April 21, 2004, 01:45:42 AM
In a thread recently ressurected by Tetsujin in the Actual Play Forum (on accident, I assume), Clinton mentioned working on a revision to the rules.  Hoewever, these threads are several months old, and I'm not sure of the status of revision, or what is going on with the game now.

I've considered buying a copy for a while now, but I wanted to see what Clinton's input was:  Do you have a concrete plan for a new version, or have other things grabbed your interest?  I never heard anything but good things about Paladin, and it would be a pity if it kind of fell off of the map.  I'm just trying to check on the status of things.

Intentions and actions are two different things, unfortunately. There will be a revision, but as to when that might happen - I wouldn't expect it before GenCon.

Well, that's not too long to wait. Seriously, I love this game :-)

Sell it to me! I like the concept in principle but, I must admit, the two reviews on rpgnow but me off hitting that purchase button (though that cover is damn sweet).

Aw c'mon Ian, you're not saying that reviews' content can actually have a negative impact on your purchase decisions?

Positive impact is all well and good, but it seems to me that you're giving away too much power to whatever any monkey can hammer into the keys. Donjon's a great buy.

Best,
Ron

Yes, Donjon is a great buy.  However, this is Paladin we're talking about. Ron, did you mean "Paladin" and type "Donjon" by accident, or can I taunt you mercilessly for your blunder? :)

Ian, here (http://www.rpg.net/news+reviews/reviews/rev_7085.html) is a more positive review for Paladin from RPGNet that might help sell you the game.

Yup, Paladin. Go ahead and mock me, as I have mis-typed.

Best,
Ron

Paladin is a great game but it's like a snowmobile, really great at what it does, not so great at doing what it wasn't specifically made to do.  As a consequence I think it puts off some of the roleplaying crowd looking for the 'one system to rule them all'.

Still I enjoy it immensely ,there are few other systems where the player's character is dragged right into the rules like Paladin. Sure in a normal rpg you can write on your character sheet about how he's the life of the party or how he's driven by  vengance, but usually that stuff gets forgotten as the GM herds you through the module he bought, in Paladin when you have Humorous 4 for your Social Flesh attribute, or Vengence 5 for your Active Dark Animus attribute, it MAKES a difference in the game no matter what.....

Check out my actual play thread here (http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=10823) then cough up the measly six bux for a great game!

I'll check the thread out.

Reviews directing my purchasing habits? Not overly, that's why I came here to get the facts ;)

Strangely enough Donjon got almost 5 stars for every review.

Paladin doth kick the butt. I'm becoming more and more fond of small games that do One Thing Really Well. It's not a perfect game, yet (I feel the Dark Animus and Marks rules could use a little work), but it's so much fun that this only came out when the Gamist in our group decided to take advantage of it.

Man, those reviews were barely even a sentence long! "Too little setting"? Paladin has four settings. "Not enough game" -- well, there you go. If you want to know how many quadloos it costs for a sack of grain, this is Not the Game for You. If, however, going out to avenge evil, smite witches and undead, and keep your land from becoming a mass of stinking evil sounds fun (and it should), it's great. There's a much more insightful review (more than two sentences!) on rpg.net http://www.rpg.net/news+reviews/reviews/rev_7085.html[/url]

I've purchase it. Scanned through it at the moment. It begs to be the system for a Jedi mini-series I've always had in the back of my head.
