Title: [Unsung] Retirement System (and more)
Post by: xiombarg on May 18, 2004, 04:23:39 PM
Well, I'm working on the for-pay version of my RPG, Unsung, and I'm looking for comments. At this point, the game is technically playable:

Introduction (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/unstart.pdf) (mainly aimed at new roleplayers)
Chapter 1: Protagonists (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un1.pdf) (chargen)
Chapter 2: Basic Concepts (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un2.pdf) (system skeleton)
Chapter 3: Gifts and Lapses (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un3.pdf)
Chapter 4: The Mission System (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un4.pdf)
Chapter 5: Shootouts (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un5.pdf) (combat)
Chapter 6: Endings, Death and Retirement (http://xiombrag.tripod.com/un6.pdf)

This is smaller than it looks -- none of these "chapters" are more than four pages or so. This is just raw text, with no layout. In the final version, the "SIDEBAR" bits will actually be in sidebars, etc.

What I'm looking for:

So, if one retires their character, and the game does not end, does the player continue to play per the rules for having a dead charactrer?

I think that you may want to look at further playtest resulst, and figure out which of the many options work best. As it is now, it's almost a "make your own system" system.

Yeah. The reward is getting to end the story however you like.

You mean overall, or just for the retirement system?

Just for the retirement system. It reads like a playtest copy, because it's saying, "Well, we're not really sure what works, so here are options. Let us know what works best." In the end you want to present one coherent vision, I think.

I can see playing out a session without a character, if he dies or retires. But I can't see coming back to play another. Is that a problem? (or is it just me).

I'm not sure I have the stamina for another campaign, but we'll see. ;-D

Are you just talking about the 50 point limit, or are you talking about the vote to see if the game continues or not? Personally, I liked keeping it open-ended that way.

Might be just you, but who knows? I mean, the idea is you're supposed to be interested in and invested in the other characters as much as your own, and in the playtest campaign, you seemed to have the most trouble with that idea, with the whole self-Gift issue.

But like any RPG, you can always create a new character after death or retirement. Perhaps I should list that as an explicit option.
