Title: Profiling strikes again - EVERYBODY play!
Post by: Ron Edwards on March 15, 2002, 10:39:28 PM
Hey everyone,

Every few months at the Forge, we play this game. It goes like this: answer the following three questions. No essays, no annotations, no explanations - just the names of games. Sign off using your first (real) name if you want to.

I'll put my own answers in so you can see how it's done.

What are the last three role-playing games that you actually, really played?
Violence Future, InSpectres, Trollbabe

What three role-playing games, out of ALL the ones you've EVER played, have you enjoyed the most? (no particular order)
Sorcerer, Hero Wars, InSpectres

What three role-playing games that you have NOT played would you most like to try? (no particular order)
The World, the Flesh, and the Devil; Dust Devils; Wyrd

Check out this older thread, Profiling (http://indie-rpgs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=843), to see what it looked like before.

Newcomers to the Forge are especially, especially welcome to respond!!

Finally, please don't turn this thread into a big conversation about this-or-that game. Give responses and go to private messages or start another thread if something really grabs you.

Best,
Ron

Tough question and pretty hard to nail down to RPGs: it always depends on the people you play with, not on the game, although a good game certainly helps.

What are the last three role-playing games that you actually, really played?
1>D&D3E,
2&3> Gurps

1- Too constrained, mechanics were slow, everything I liked about D&D (simplicity from old Basic D&D) was gone

2- Gurps-- Post-Fantasy Setting/IE--Fantasy Setting with Earth based anachronisms that stood out like sore thumb. Game was meant to be serious but mechanics/plot elements made it better suited to a Toon/Superhero game.

3) Gurps also fantasy but based on a fantasy "Greece"/Military unit  was fun, but all too brief.

Note: I rarely /play/ once ever few years it seems is the best I get.

Enjoyed Most:
Talislanta
OD&D homebrew with many elements from Greg Costikiyan's "Swords and Sorcery" SPI boardgame (don't know that I could enjoy it nowadays, though)
Bar Room Brawl (this was a little thing in White Dwarf designed to be played with D&D. You got a character, a motivation, and the props of the bar . . we must've played 5-6 times, burning down the bar all but once, and having an absolute blast every time. Probably could still enjoy this one)

Want to Play:
Story Engine, Hero Wars, Sorceror (probably NOT the "& Sword" flavor anymore . . . but that's a topic for another post)

Haven't actually played in ages.

Most Enjoyed
WFRP - Enemy Within campaign (played over a lot of Wednesday afternoons and evenings at uni. So much fun)
Unknown Armies (GM'd a couple of very linear, very railroaded sessions, with player buy in on that, and we both had a blast)
A LRP based around deciding the succession to the throne after a king had died, way back at uni, great fun, everyone got into it and we managed to get our girl to be the new queen !)

Most want to play
Something noir mystery based, I wanna play a Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe type character. Sorceror would be good, but I'm not fussed system wise or GNS wise, just wanna unravel a mystery, get the girl(s;-)) and get beat up a lot.

I want to run a Twin Peaks style, surreal murder mystery with a lot of narrativism in there, probably using a hybrid of Risus and FUDGE.

I've also got the urge to run a really high fantasy game, with ice palaces, entire cultures living in one dirty great tree, flying castles, over the top action and magic and (melo)drama, but that might just be because I'm playing Final Fantasy IX again just now.

Quote from: Ron EdwardsEvery few months at the Forge, we play this game. It goes like this: answer the following three questions. No essays, no annotations, no explanations - just the names of [role-playing] games. Sign off using your first (real) name if you want to.

What are the last three that you actually...played?
Anime Smash (a spur of the moment, whatever you want to play, gamemaster stress-test/cage match), Pokéman (that's with an 'a,' as in human characters with the powers of individual pokémon), and, of course, Scattershot

Quote from: Ron EdwardsWhat three role-playing games...have you enjoyed the most?
(Anyone remember?) Man to Man (the Steve Jackson Games precursor to GURPS, it was just the combat system), and with no surprise: Anime Smash (I out-gamemastered them all, after all) and Scattershot

Quote from: Ron EdwardsWhat three role-playing games...would you most like to try?
Teenagers from Outer Space (I'd like a chance to actually play next time I play this one), Nobilis (I still have my first edition), and Scattershot presents: The Unseen, Plying the Courts of the Hidden Kings (our LARP game set in a modern, Charles De Lint-esque, street-faerie realm)

What are the last three role-playing games that you actually, really played?

Swift (own design system) heroic fantasy setting; Swift (old version) Superspies (loosely based on Shadowforce Archer but set in 2008); S (variant), Fading Suns setting.

What three role-playing games, out of ALL the ones you've EVER played, have you enjoyed the most? (no particular order)

The above three. :)

What three role-playing games that you have NOT played would you most like to try? (no particular order)

Nobilis; GURPS Transhuman Space; Zero (own rules system).

What are the last three role-playing games that you actually, really played?

Unknown Armies, InSpectres, and the ubiquitous D&D3e

What three role-playing games, out of ALL the ones you've ever played, have you enjoyed the most?

I can't honestly say that I've truly enjoyed any particular game. The people, yes. The memories, sure. The emotions, yes. But I dunno...do I actually enjoy playing? Have I ever?

What three role-playing games that you have NOT played would you most like to try?

Donjon Krawl, Sorcerer & Sword, Clinton's as-of-yet-unnamed superheroes game.

What three role-playing games that you have NOT played would you most like to try, Jared? You can prevent end-of-post truncation when using HTML by finishing your posts with an empty set of <PRE></PRE> tags. It's not pretty, but it works.
