Title: Piracy Paradox
Post by: jrs on November 14, 2006, 03:52:30 PM
Hi folks,

I thought about adding this link to the Copyright Resources sticky, but it isn't really a resource -- just interesting.  The paper, The Piracy Paradox: Innovation and Intellectual Property in Fashion Design will appear in the December Virginia Law Review.  It is being discussed here: http://uchicagolaw.typepad.com/faculty/2006/11/fashions_piracy.html

I am intrigued by the argument that the absence of strong IP rights does not necessarily reduce innovation.  I also find the description of fashion's innovation/diffusion cycle analogous to rpg publication.  I have certainly witnessed the increase in desire for the "next new thing" among the customers visiting the GenCon Forge Booth.

I just did a quick skim, but that looks very interesting. It definetly deserves a more detailed read. Thanks.
