Title: [OT?] Downloading and Maintaining Message Boards
Post by: Demonspahn on June 13, 2002, 08:24:56 PM
Hi.  I guess this post is primarily for Clinton R. Nixon but I wasn't exactly sure where to post it.

We have recently released our game Dreamwalker: Roleplaying in the Land of Dreams and I wanted to put a more functional message board on our web site than the one we have now.  I was wondering how difficult the installation and maintenance of the phpbb boards are and if you (or anyone else) could give me a layman's step by step process on how to go about installing one on my site, if you have some spare time.

Thanks either way,

Pete

No problem. PHPbb is really easy to install - you can get it from http://www.phpbb.com, and a good installation guide can be found at http://www.phpbb.com/guide/phpBB_Users_Guide.html.

You'll need to be able to run PHP on your server, and have access to a database, preferably MySQL.

Ouch.  I took a wring turn at MySQL and was completely lost by the time I reached the phpBB Users Guide.  I think I will have to keep the cheesy AT&T message board I have for now.  The layout of this site is just so pleasing to look at, I wanted to copy it.  Just goes to show you, you have to be a professional to look professional.

Thanks for responding, though.

I didn't notice you were on a @home.att.net account - you won't have access to MySQL (or probably, PHP). If you ever decide to move your website to a different server, let me know, and I'll help you set it up.
