Title: Getting licences to old games
Post by: Michael Hopcroft on August 15, 2002, 09:27:52 PM
Someone on the GPA list was recently told that Tri-Tac's founder is shopping around the rights to one of his old games, Fringeworthy.

I have a lot of good ideas for one of his other games, Incursion. At the risk of spreading myself too thin, would such a licence be tenable without massive amounts of cash up front and how would one go about renewing interest in a very old (late '80s) property updated to the 21st century?

Mind you, this is just an idea -- not something I'm committing myself to attempt.

The first thing I would do is do a internet search (be sure to troll around the different mailing list servers, especially) for people who are fans of the old version of the game. Post on Usenet about it, see how many people perk up. This should give you a sort of thumbnail sense of how good an idea it is, and the sort of player that's going to be interested.

Michael,

We just did some research on licensing and if you do it right it shouldn't break the bank.   The key is to reach an agreement that works for everyone and walk away if you have to.
