Title: Idea for new feature
Post by: ethan_greer on February 11, 2004, 04:49:56 PM
So, at the top left of the screen you've got some options - "View posts since last visit (count)" (henceforward referred to as VPSLV) is the one I use most often.  But I thought of another one I'd like even better:

View threads active in last 24 hours.

So, you click on that, and it gives you a list of topics that have had activity in the last 24 hours, in order by most recent activity first.  This would prevent the sometimes irritating missing of posts by people like me who use the VPSLV function.  All you'd have to do is check the board more than once a day and there's no way you'd miss any posts ever.  That's my thinking anyway.  It's not foolproof, but I still think it would be as good or better than the VPSLV.

Dunno if its feasible with phpBB, but it was just a thought... And I should add at this point that I really appreciate all the features and mods Clinton's done to make the Forge as useful as possible - from an interface standpoint it's one of the best message forums I've come across.

Ethan,

Noted, and thinking about it.

For the record, here's a nice little hack: click the 'Search' link at the top of the page. Enter '*' for the post author's name on the Search form and submit the form. All posts, in backwards chronological order appear.

Kewl. Can you limit it to specific forums?

That reminds me.  Would it be possible to have a 'View Posts Since Last Visit in Favorite Forums' link?  Favorite forums could be specified within the user profile.

?

M.J.,

Yep. Just choose your forum on the search page.

Cruciel,

Less likely. That would take more coding than I reasonably have time for right now.

I wouldn't recommend that feature, even if it was easy actually.

We want the Forge to be a community, so I'd hesitate promoting any feature that makes it easier for members to hole up in just a handful of forums and ignore the rest.

There are a number of people who are regular readers and posters in a variety of forums who first came through the TROS or HQ forums.  If they'd had the ability to just look at posts from those forums, they might never have realized there was other stuff going on they'd like to participate in.

Ralph, I'd argue (because I find the 'Since Last Visit' link too cluttered to be useful to someone like me), but it dunna matter because Clinton's 'that's a pain in the ass' answer is perfectly OK with me.  :)

Cool.  Thanks, Clinton!

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that some time ago.  I use it every so often, but clicking through the search interface is a bit of a drag... Hence my idea... :)
