Title: So, how many Brits?
Post by: Matt Machell on April 07, 2004, 05:01:26 PM
Following from the Kiwi thread, how many Brits are there hanging around? I've noticed a few, but I'm wondering if there are some lurking...

And, to make it vaguely useful, should we meet up and crash a con at some point?

*Raises hand*

Any cons this year?  They seem to have admitted that Gencon Europe was a bad idea and just called this onu Gencon UK like we all have for ages.

I'm a Brit.
I was waiting for news of Ambercon UK (I have been most years since it began, but it seems to be all quiet this year, so I am a little concerned)

Another brit checking in. I live in Cambridge.

I must admit I've never been to a con. I've a natural aversion to most other RPers. (Present company excluded for the most part I think. I've just found that the stereotypes are true unfortunately often.)

And another on. Lovely sunny weather here today in Hastings (well, St Leonards, it's right next door.)

Never been to a con either - its always sounded like a very expensive way of turning a hobby into a stressful activity. However, I'm willing to change the habits of a lifetime if I get to meet some cool indie gamers. Especially if I get to play (or run) a game of DiTV.

Well, I sound like an American, but I was born in Scotland and I live in England at the moment. GB Steve is also (as the GB suggests) around here somewheres.

As for a con to crash, how about this one? (http://www.consternation.org.uk/)

Given that it's in the same city as me, and so relatively affordable on a poor student budget, I'd be tentatively interested in crashing consternation. Unfortunately I have a sneaking suspicion that it lies within the dates when I'm going to be going to my family reunion... Doh.

I'll need to check dates on that, but put me down as a maybe for the idea.

You're doing grad work after having done your undergrad here? You're more tolerant of the university than I am! Or possibly you have a better department. I'm a mathematician, and have a very very low opinion of our department. What do you do?

I'm an archaeologist. Actually, I did my undergrad work, went away to work for a bit, did an MA at Durham, and now I'm back here. I wasn't an undergrad in archaeology though, but in history. We have a pretty good department here, though -- good access to the things I need for my work, good people in my field.

I've only been to one of these before (Conjuration in 2003) but it was a good time. A very pleasant, laid-back con atmosphere, very friendly.

OK, well *parts* of it are quite nice.

Oddly, I still have no idea how I ended up here, though.

Another Brit here, living in Chorley, Lancashire.  I have been lurking a little bit but there is just so much to take in on this site it is very easy to get overwhelmed by it all I guess.  By the way anyone interested in a Sorcerer game in Lancashire?

Chalk up one more for Cambridge. I'm working as a computer science researcher at the moment; I love the city, but I'm getting out of academia as soon as my current contract expires.

Not so much, though the accent is certainly south of heaven. Kingsbury->Stanmore->Archway->Wood Green->Camden->...(out of London - gasp)->Golders Green->Finsbury Park->Clerkenwell->Kings Cross.

Doug, you should definitely come to a con and run Dogs. I do recommend Consternation. Oh, and there's something coming up called MayCon. Don't know much about it, but early signs seem good.

It's interesting to see the changes since I first posted this topic two years ago.

From my perspective there seem to be many more folks from this side of the pond active on the site now, and in the attendant blog-sphere. There seems to be more of an "indie scene" building over here too. We totally rocked Conpulsion with Indie Games Track. There are already mutterings of a bigger presence for indie games at Dragonmeet and other cons, maybe even an indie fest.

This is all kinds of awesome.
