Title: German translation of important terms and phrases
Post by: Frank T on October 02, 2005, 10:25:04 AM
I have translated some of the most important terms and phrases from Polaris into German to hand out to the players. I thought others might want to use this, too.

Moments frozen from the flow of time

The key phrases
- Die Schlüsselsätze

Long time ago, the people were dying at the end of the world.
- Das Volk lag im Sterben, vor langer Zeit, am Ende der Welt.

But hope was not yet lost, for ___ still heard the song of the stars.
- Doch noch war nicht aller Hoffnung Abend, denn ___ konnte das Lied der Sterne noch hören.

And so it was ... –
Und es begab sich, ... (start scene) / Und so geschah es. (end scene)

But all that happened long ago, and now there are none who remember it.
- Doch das war vor langer Zeit, und heute gibt es niemand mehr, der sich daran erinnert.

But only if ...
- Doch nur, wenn ...

And furthermore ...
- Und überdies ...

It shall not come to pass!
- Es wird nicht geschehen!

You ask far too much.
- Du verlangst bei weitem zu viel.

It was not meant to be.
- Es sollte nicht sein.

And that was how it happened.
- Und so hat es sich zugetragen.

But it was no matter.
- Doch es war einerlei.

We shall see what comes of it.
- Man wird sehen, was sich daraus ergibt.

I've got a Dutch translation lying around. I'll polish it and post it here soon.

Can I just say that I love this thread?

I'll do my best to get all the translations publically available PDFified and up on the website shortly.  So far we have Finnish, German, French (intended) and Dutch (not yet available for public consumption.)

Yay!

Hi, Ben!

The book has not yet arrived to my mailbox, but you can have no doubt that one of the things I will do as soon as I put my hands on it will be to do a spanish translation. I will need it to play. You can count with it.

Well... as I'm reading it again it sounds to me like I'm going to translate the whole book. Nothing would please me more that having time to do that. I'm afraid I was only meaning the key phrases/cheat seat. You can count with that.

Good translation, by the way, Frank. I love "Jungfrau Frost", and am tempted to do something similar.

(Although unfortunately in Dutch "Frost" and "Fürst" translate to the same word, "vorst", and I'd naturally like to avoid anything that can be read as "Jungfrau Fürst".)

By the way: I found The Polaris Song. It is "Eisblumen", by a German Folk-Metal-Band called Subway to Sally. Here's part of the lyrics:

"Der Morgen wandelt Reif zu Tau
Der Tag macht alles grell und rau
Wir kleiden uns in Traurigkeit
Doch geht der Tag kommt unsre Zeit

Wer leuchten will, der flieht das Licht
Der schaut der Nacht ins Angesicht

Die Bleichheit, die von unsren Wangen schneit
Macht uns wie Engel schön
Sie werden auf die Knie gehen
Und beten, dass der Mond verhangen bleibt

Wir sind wie Eisblumen
Wir blühen in der Nacht
Wie sind wie Eisblumen
Viel zu schön für den Tag
Wir sind wie Eisblumen
Kalt und schwarz ist unsre Macht
Eisblumen blühen in der Nacht"

Note that "Eisblumen" refers to frost patterns, but the words mean "ice flowers". A brief and clumsy translation:

"Morning is turning hoarfrost into dew
Day is making everything crude and harsh
We dress ourselves in sadness
But leave the day, our time arrives

He who wants to shine flees the light
And looks into the face of night

The paleness snowing from our cheeks
Makes us like angels beautiful
They will fall to their knees
And pray for the moon to stay coated

We are like ice flowers
We bloom at nighttime
We are like ice flowers
Far too beautiful for daytime
We are like ice flowers
Cold and black is our power
Ice flowers bloom at nighttime"

(Does the rule of discourse apply to this forum? :-P )
