Title: What I need from Indie Games Explosion at Gen Con Volenteers
Post by: Kat Miller on March 15, 2006, 04:04:41 PM
What do I need to do to be part of the Indie Games Explosion at Gen Con?

Gen Con has changed their Event Registration process for this year.  For a Sponsor or Gaming Group (Like Indie Games Explosion) One person needs to act as Event Organizer-the EO)

The Event Organizer needs to register all the events for the organization.

A number of Complimentary badges will be awarded according to how many player Hours of Gaming the Organization is doing as a whole.  One badge for every 96 Player Hours.  (the equivalent of 4 events run for 4 hours for 6 people.)

Shifts as Table Custodian for The Games on Demand Table will figure in as well.  Each shift will be 4 hours and be open for 8 people. 1 shift = 32 Player hours.  3 shifts is enough for a badge.

I've asked for Long tables rather than round tables for the Games on Demand figuring that 2  Indie games of  four people can run at the same table.

If you decide you want to be part of the Games explosion I need a few important bits of information:

I need your full name to give you credit as GM.

I need to know the game your are running, the title of the scenario and a brief description: (max. 450 characters.  Keep it about 50 words)

I need to know when you want to run the Game.

For example:

Name: Michael S. Miller
Game: With Great Power
Title: League of Their Own
Description: You do have the suit, the powers and the love of the city, everything a hero needs except a license.  The city is being preyed on by villainy. If you act with out the license you may save the day at your own peril, but if you don't who will?
When:  Thursday 7pm-11pm, AND Friday 8am-12pm,

Game: Dogs In The Vineyard
Title: Annie Get Your Gun
Description: There is Great Desperation in the Town of Homefields since the Carnival came to town to stay.  Fewer and Fewer of the faithful are showing up at Service.  There's a blight on the Crops a draught on the land and they say the Devil himself prowls the hills at night, picking up the unwary.  Send in the Dogs.

When: Sunday 10am.

I'm going to set all games at
Age : 13+
Experience:Young Players (Rules are taught)
Difficulty Rating: Easy

If you would rather mature players only (18+)
And an Average or Hard difficulty let me know.

GAMES ON DEMAND shifts.
I'd like to be able to have These Shifts all Filled with Table Custodians.
Thursday 10am-2pm
Thursdays 2pm-6pm
Friday 10am-2pm
Friday 2pm-6pm
Friday 6pm-10pm
Saturday 10am-2pm
Saturday 2pm-6pm
Saturday 6pm-10pm
Sunday 10am-2pm

Table Custodians may or may not get to actually run games.  My hope is that people will be ushered to the Games on Demand Table and the Custodian can offer the Games he wants to run. Also if There is a situation with a gm and willing players at the booth they can go to the Games on Demand table.  The Custodian will collect Generic tickets per player.  Kept organized together in a packet I'll provide and passed on to the next Custodian.  I'll be collecting all the paperwork and getting the necessary signatures and such.

Who gets the Complimentary Badges?
Anyone who does the 96 player hours and wants one will get a badge.  If you can't do 4 events of 6 people or 5 events of 5 people or 3 GoD shifts, but you still need a badge PM me and I'll see what I can do.

OH!  Gen Cons deadline is April 7th, but they are assigning stuff first come first served and are warning that space might be an issue.  So I will be Registering Indie Games Explosion Events Wednesday March 22 to give us plenty of time for Gen Con to put our games all in the same room.

Thus I need the Event Info (Name, Game, Description, When,) as soon as possible

I'm posting this up on My blog:  http://imogena.livejournal.com/
and at the Story Games Meetups Forum: http://www.story-games.com/forums/?CategoryID=7

If you have an Questions I'd be happy to answer them.  and thanks to all how have already Pm'd me about volenteering.

Kat,

You may have covered this, but I haven't been able to find it: do you want us to post responses here in the thread, PM you, or email you?  Do you even have a preference?  I'm sure it's easier on you if all the information winds up in the same place...

Hey, Kat.

Thanks a ton for doing this.

I will not be able to commit to running stuff because of the demands of the booth, but would it be reasonable to swing by and maybe run some stuff catch-as-catch-can at the Games on Demand table?

Kat's sittin' on the sofa and shouting: "YES!" That's exactly what the Games On Demand are supposed to do. It'd be more than reasonable, it'd be much appreciated and highly cool.

I really want to get behind this.  Especially the GoD track.  Kat, assuming you don't have anyone signed up already I can cover the 10am-2pm shift at the GoD table Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  And if you can't get anyone else to jump in, I can probably do Sunday too.

I remember this past year feeling bad hanging around at the Forge booth all the time after I bought the games I wanted, but still really wanting to get a chance to sit down and play those games.  I'd love to be part of the solution to that problem.

I completely want to support this but I have no idea what the demands on my time will be - can any of the experienced hands help me sort that out?  As a first-time publisher at my first Gen Con, I really don't know what to expect, and definitely don't want to over commit and let Kat and IGE down.  Thoughts?

Hi Jason,

Don't worry about letting anyone down. With MSM as a husband I have an idea what kind of demands you publishers face at Gen Con, which is why I wanted to step up to organize the IGE events since I'm not really a part of the booth.  If you get a 2 hour break and want to play a game and have a couple of people who want to game with you, take them up to the RPG room to the GoD Table.  If you hear people complaining because they want to game right now refer them to the GoD table.  That in itself would be wonderful.

I definitely intend to roll around to the table if I need a break from the booth.

I'll say also that the "On demand" part of this really makes me think that it would be well suited to the "extended sales pitch" ... if you get a small group of people who are really on the line you say "Okay, how about you purchase this, this and this ... go pay!  Go!  Now, let's me and you guys head outside to the gaming-on-demand table, and play some of this stuff.  Then you can come back, buy some more, and go spread the word."

In addition to the schedule for people manning the table, it might well be worth it to have non-designer-folk at the booth who know that they are (for a four hour shift) acting as "runners."  Their goal would be to latch on to such groups (or have them handed off by a designer) and to transport them to the GoD table with the candy-like enticement of gaming, then play the game with them.  We could give them "customer liaison" badges, or something.

Tony, that is exactly what I hope the Games On Demand Tables will do.

Kat,

Thursday, Friday, Sunday is something I can tentatively commit to.  The only scheduled event I want to make this year is the Jared/Luke/Vincent/Clinton (or whoever they've got this year) seminar.  Last year it was Friday.  Let me check and get back to you on that, but expect me for Thursday and Sunday for sure.

Oh, another question: you've got one person signed up as an official table manager.  I assume that you'd be totally cool with (maybe even encourage) people hanging around while they're not on shift so that they can play and run and help out, right?

Thomas,
yes,
I'm assuming the seminar thing is going to be Friday too.
So I'll put you down for Thursday and Sunday 10am - 2pm
if the Seminar is after 2pm can I get you for Friday?

Yes.  My hope is that people will congregate to the GoD table to Game.  The Table Custudian will collect generic tickets from them and run a game.  The Table Custodian should bring materials for any games he is willing to run and potential players can choose.  Also, others may come prepared with Gm being ushered up from the Exhibit Hall to Game.  the Table Custodian collects tickets from these people.  Thats about it.

Kat,

I'll definitely be participating. The only question is in what manner. I'll get you the details when I have a better idea.

Thanks for organizing this,
Mike
