Title: Thousand Kings Rules Changes
Post by: Ben Lehman on September 06, 2007, 09:27:56 PM
I have changed the rules of the game. If you have the O.II.O version, change it accordingly.

This changes three things: Memories, the post-session adjustments and spirits.

Memories:
You may discard a memory any time it is no longer important.

Post Adventure:

If you left through a door:

Pick your highest wound. Keep it. With your other wounds you may discard them if they don't mean anything. If you do not discard them, lower them by one and keep them.

Write an entry in the notebook, or edit an existing entry. This must have to do with your adventure this evening. Pick a memory or wound associated with this entry (yours or someone else's) and raise it by one. Keep these memories and wounds. After everyone has done this, you may discard the remaining memories if you wish. If you do not, lower them by one and keep them on your sheet.

Assist the gatekeeper in portraying the residents of the land of a thousand kings, if you wish.

If you left suddenly, or through violence:

Keep your highest wound. Keep or discard the others.

Add one to your highest wound. Add an additional one for each wound you discarded.

Write an entry in the notebook, or edit an existing entry.

Discard all your memories. If you wish, and if you have space for it, you may turn any existing memory into a wound of equal value.

Assist the gatekeeper in portraying the residents of the land of a thousand kings, if you wish.

If you are the gatekeeper:

Add one to one attribute of any two people of consequence, if you wish.

Add one or two entries to the notebook, or edit existing entries. These must have to do with the events of this adventure and foreshadow future events. For each of these, you may pick an associated memory or wound and raise it by one.

Discard any memories or wounds on residents that are no longer important. If a visitor says it is important, it's important.

Aligning Spirits: This happens during set-up, only if you're revisiting.

Before you go back to the land of a thousand kings, you can align your spirits. You can align up to three spirits, each generally associated with a wound.

Here are the options for aligning spirits:
1) Talk briefly about a time, between now and the last time you went to the land of a thousand kings, where something reminded you of the wound. This gives you a spirit of value equal to the wound.
2) Talk briefly about a time, between now and the last time you went to the land of a thousand kings, where you acted differently in your own world because of your experiences in the land of a thousand kings. This allows you to adjust the wound up or down by two points, then gives you a spirit of the value of the wound.
3) Talk briefly about a time, between now and the last time you went to the land of a thousand kings, when because of something that happened in the land of a thousand kings, tied to this wound, you acted different and it made your life or another person's life better. This lowers the value of the wound by one, then gives you a spirit equal to the value of the wound plus three.

The spirit is related to the recollection. So, from the wound "guilty" you might have "I don't feel guilty after all" or "I'm honest now" or whatever.

If you are the servant of a king, you can only align one spirit.
If you are a king, you may not align spirits.
Residents of the land of a thousand kings do not have spirits.

Using spirits: This happens during play.

You may use a spirit any time that you might use a recollection, in place of it.  It must apply to the action. It gives dice equal to its value. You may give the dice to yourself, to another visitor, or to the gatekeeper. Use them only for good.
Once you use a spirit, cross it off. It may not be used again.

Forgive me if I'm wrong since its really my first time on these forums. I've been reading up on the posts and I'm rather interested on the concept of the Thousand Kings game. I'd like to have a look at the rules for this and since you kinda offered if anyone wants to have a pdf copy of the rules I was wondering if I can have one? Or is this offer only limited to some playtesters? Thanks!

Hi! The game is available to playtesters, yes. It's not a super-secret club, but, uh, it's not done. Don't play it as opposed to playing Bliss Stage or Polaris or another finished game.
