Title: Permission?
Post by: Ferry Bazelmans on October 11, 2002, 05:53:58 AM
Heya Jared,

I'm working on the concept for a game about Disposal Teams (Running Man, Judge Dredd and Hardcopy all rolled into one) and I think the idea of hogging the camera (and using directorial power to "predict" the future in the game) would be really useful and great in the game.

I realize there is no way to copyright a game mechanic, but I felt it was common decency to check if you would mind if I used that concept from InSpectres (confessionals) in the game.

Nope, sorry.

The Confessionals mechanic has been submitted to the US Patent Office and is awaiting review. I would be willing to allow you to license the mechanic from me for a small fee.

Now, Jared, you *know* it's not kosher to discuss a pending patent application in public - the attorney made you sign the papers!  And license discussions in an open forum - tsk, tsk.  You obviously need help managing your intellectual property.  It so happens I could hook you up with a software solution - but with a massive brain-trust like memento-mori to protect, it's not going to be cheap . . .

('cause I failed my Fortitude roll)

Uh . . . the idea of memento-mori getting an "IP Management" software system isn't hysterically funny to everyone?  Jared, Inc., with legions of patent attorneys dressed in black t-shirts and gold-tipped mohawks?

Jared applying for a patent on the Confessional?  Yup, obviously a joke.  Teasing Jared about "bad form" in pursuing his patent - seemed like a joke too.  But now I may have to hang MYself.

Failing to be funny.  There is no greater crime . . . :-)

For what it's worth, I think the whole thread is pretty freakin' hillarious. :)
