My advice would be to at first ignore what has gone before. Honestly I think the downfall of Supers games has been the mechanics. I do not think people want to be like Superman or even play Superman, I think people want to experience life as Superman. They want to have thrilling color adventures and be a compelling character in and of themselves. the various systems let you be a guy with a gun or have lasers come out of your ass when you fart or let you take ten points in Big Boobs.  I have played a few, tried to create a few and watched others sweat over ceating a few Supers RPGs and I have never found one that created the kind of thunder that a comic or cartoon creates.

Lets take Superman. What do we know about him initially?

He is from Krypton, which blowed up.
He is big and strong because of some gravity difference between Earth and Krypton
Kryptonite is bad for him
He can fly and is not afraid to wear tights
He lives a secret life as a beat reporter and has the hots for Miss I still dress like its the 30's Lois Lane

Where are his stats? Who needs them? Superman Kicks ass. Wolverine kicks ass. Batman, Wonder woman, Jean Grey, (insert Indie Comic labels here) kick ass.

Kick Ass may be the only mechanic you need.

Dammit, now I am getting the Supers game itch again. :)
