Hi, I am currently in the process of making a RPG series called "Clash of the Worlds". I am running the first two chapters of "CotW: From Past to Present" this weekend with a few of my friends. I would like you all to tell me what you think of the idea
Basically, it has to do with all the worlds and cultures of the video game universe, and for some reason unknown to you, the worlds were merged into one, called Merge. As you may guess, video games have different styles and eras of time. The Final Fantasy worlds that were merged have more of a sci fi technology to them while older games like Balder's Gate and Siege of Avalon have a sword and shield type of world.
So, as the worlds stopped merging, all the people were in a panic since they found these...strange people are there with them and they don't know what to do. All the heroes and main characters of the games organized their people and started what was known as the Great Wars to try to dominate Merge and destroy the other people so their customs and ways would be what Merge is based on. The Great Wars went on for several decades.
After the dust cleared, the original inhabitants sealed the 6 Great Heroes from the wars into the Tomb of Old in the capital town of North Falls. They did this in the hope of never letting the horror and death they inflicted to come again. The people went on with their lives, with the survivors of the wars living in small villages shrewn across the world.
It is now 1000 years later. A group of scholars called The Wise have been set up about 50 years ago to learn as much as they can about The Great Wars. Rumors have been spreading of a "Reawakening", and that The Wise should leave at once before the past becomes present once again. You, in the game, control the past. You must reassert your reign in the wars and finish what was started long ago. You can take out the people of Merge by yourself, or stay in the shadows. You must make sure the other Heroes don't awaken, and the Factions of Old do not find out that you are back. You can gain the trust of old allies and enemies, rally your troops again, or take on the world by yourself.  But remember, you are not the only one that was brought back to the living. How are you going to accomplish your task, or are you going to do it at all? What will do you with your life? Who will you kill? Who will you not?

Welcome to Merge.

So what do you think? It's a little of a crude explanation, but I am also writing this at almost 1 in the morning. I have a lot of nice plot twists and game ideas in motion, i just hope it works out well. Let me know what you think. I could not tell all that there is because one of the players that i will be running the game with this weekend is registered to this board, and I don't want him to have the surprises spoiled already...

First, you'll want to read the following: Fantasy Heartbreakers and More Fantasy Heartbreakers, both by Ron Edwards, under the Reviews link at top.

Right now, I'm not seeing much more than a setting here (and thus it might be more appropriate in Actual Play). Thus, questions:

Can you tell us a little bit about the system you are using to run this game?

What are your specific concerns with designing this game?

I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy series and so forth, but how are you integrating the idea that each game's feel and mechanical style interacts with that of another game?

well, the system is the standard d20 dungeons and dragons type of style, but it's not in a way. The game is not really based on dice rolls, more on the actions that the players take. I mean, there still are dice rolls for like attacks, but not for everything like sneaking around. Each player will get their own character sheet based on who they picked. What I think is cool is that they don't really get to pick their characters; they are given to them by me based on what they do for the first half of the prologue. Again, I can not say a whole lot because one of the players is registered to this board.

If possible, take Calculus.  Doubly if possible, take AP Calculus BC.

It will eat your soul.  If you've had an easy time in school, it will break your head.  (If you've already gotten used to the idea of needing to study, you'll do leaps and bounds better than your 'smarter' peers) And it's a GOOD class to get ready for the level of work/study that you'll need at DigiPen (from what I've heard, leastwise- DigiPen sounds comparable to Ga Tech with less fluffy fun classes)

Yeah, I'm going to take all the math I can in high school. I've never had the need to study in school because I have always done well. I've never been off the honor roll.

That's going to be a problem. Tell the player not to look. We can't help you unless you give us more info.

Have you considered not using the D20 paradigm?

Better yet, what sort of design goals do you have for the game? How is it suppoded to play? What's the action about?
