Fascinating. My friend who's game I'm discussing over on Actual Play is continuing to labor at this same issue. Currently he is using GM tricks like the one descibed in that thread to "not completely ignore the player's decisions" and desires. He hasn't gone to pure railroading yet, but his girlfriend has.
