I was trying to jazz up the occasion, so I tried to find some useful accessories at the arts n' craft stores.

Some places sell bags of multicolored transparent discs used for playing Bingo ("bingo markers" or "chips"). These make nifty coins. They have a metal wire rim so you can clean up with a magnet.

An assortment of neon-colored 3x5 index cards for writing down objects and traits.

Find a flamboyant feather to insert into a ball-point pen to make the official trait recording pen. A peacock feather is fun.

I found a set of iridescent glass votive candle holders. They are somewhat spherical, and just the right size to hold about 25 coins. One per player.

An ornate shallow dish to serve as the bank.

A set of the two-page cheat sheet in a document protector might be useful.

I also found a shoebox sized plastic case to hold all of this stuff.

Anything else?

Beer?

Or maybe a character naming sourcebook?

Since you're going for this over the top festive thing, how about something big and colorful to pass around indicating whose turn it is...or a silly hat!  :-)

I use metal pachislo tokens. You can get a few hundred for very litte (just check eBay) and they sound great when you toss them in the pot.

We use little glass beads (pick em up in a garden centre or hobby store), many of the people I play with are card gamers which is where we have them from. Besides... they're pretty.

Is anything cheaper than pennies to use as coins?

-Hudson (getting tired of spending money on games that are *supposed* to be all in the imagination anyway) Shock

I've always used pennies, with a small supply of nickles for making change with.

But I think this time around I'm going to try the small poker chips or tiddly wink chips for GenCon.

A few hundred pennies weighs a ton, especially when carried around a con in a shoulder bag.

The Wah

My group uses plastic poker chips.

There is something very satisfying about throwing the poker chip into the bowl at the centre of the table and saying "Interrupt".

I have bought some old library cards to write all the traits down. You know the cards i mean. Before library catalogues went digital all books were written down on a small piece of cardboard that had a small hold punched into the top. They are the best size for this game

Heh, like the one the pirate has on the cover.

Then again, you really shouldn't share hats...

I'm very down with the "thing to pass." Idea. It can really be an aid to play like remembering during challenges whose turn it was that was interrupted by the Challenge. I refer to this as the "Fred," coming from a drinking game my friends used to play called "Pass the Fred" where the "Fred" can be anything.

For instance, I have a big old conch shell that I've been thinking of using...

Conch is nice...especially if you're playing Lord of the Flies Universalis.

If you don't want to share hats, you could scam several Burger King kiddie-crowns and each player could have their own...then only the person wearing the crown can speak.  If you toss a Coin into the pot and put on your crown, the other person takes theirs off with a pout.  :-)

I don't have the game yet, but when I do, I expect we'll use old buttons for coins. Maybe we could even have a rule where the type of button has to have something to do with the thing you just put in the story. "Well, this guy's a king, so here's a gold button." I might have to quash my cousin's tendencies to go "my pink button beats your brown button" though...unless that'd make it even more fun heh.

We'll probably just use old yogurt cups to put our "coins" in. Great thing about this game, you don't need a bunch of expensive special stuff. :)
If a squirrel is chasing you, drop your nuts and run.

I genrally use the plastic variant of the glass gamer beads - a bit larger at the same weight, and less glass fragment issues when in a bag with other stuff.

I also sometimes use my big box of loose change, which holds coins from about 12 countries - one of the first Uni games I played, one player felt bad about using a $2 equivalent coin to beat his neighbour's penny in a contest for the turn... but he did say that the coin was a statement about how serious he was. :)

Both cool ideas. I hadn't considered tokens with a secondary indicator of intent associated with them. That might be really cool. :-)

Buttons, gotta try that out someday..

We always use go markers. (You can probably find yourself a game of go and have markers for your life.. plus a nice game!) Black markers are evil, white are good.. ;-)
