If you do a modifier as stats/skills increase you get more dice, bigger dice, whatever, go ahead and make it so that total failure is relatively impossible, and success comes at varying degrees. I guess this would be like a ladder of successes and failures or something.

You may want to add some sort of cool niche to your game that takes into account player skills not just character skills.

An example is roll each dice seperately and let the character roll the dice into the dice to get better results. Thats always fun...

Making a system for friends is, in my opinion, far more rewarding and fun than making a system for tons of people. Add some human elements, to your dice, you'll find that its really rewarding.

Maybe you should have color coded dice as well and different sizes.

Ontop of dice explore the art of giving your players 3-4 decisions that are crucial every action. If its just dice smashing, it gets boring you know? Make them strategize in which situation doing such-and-such is the most effective.

I guess my biggest piece of advice is, if you've only played D&D, then take no mechanics from it. As in, make up everything so it doesn't resemble D&D. Creativity and uniqueness will get players hooked.

Just because I have only played D&D doesn't mean I haven't seen other systems. Actually, recently I joined an online campaign with a friend of mine that moved away using the Returner Games FFRPG. It's turning out to be a fairly fun game.

Either way, the 3-4 crucial decisions thing that you suggested - Is that really part of a system. To me, it looks more like just good GMing. You can probably do something to that extent no matter what system you intend on using.

Either way, thanks for the input guys. I'm going to go ahead and post my example of play and what few notes I have gotten over the past few days for my RPG: SPIRIT Theory.
