Schisming and Alliance

I am not sure if this is actually covered in the rules or just maybe implied:

When one schisms off a side that one was allied to, creating a new side, one is no longer considered allied with that old side, but instead allied with one's new created side, correct?  The change of alliance happens automatically, when the schisming occurs?
