So I was watching the food channel throw down show on a whim and thought how cool would that be with games. I think it would be real cool to get a couple indie designers/editors together who share similar creation processes and such to challenge some "professional groups". I foresee four groups the indie group, a group working for wotc, a group working for white wolf, and a group working for say palladium. The groups would all be set up in some similar temporary living conditions and given a month to provide a functioning play tested game. The entire thing could be say pod casted or something with ads and donations helping to pay the boarding of the groups.

I think it would be very interesting to see some of the indie groups pit against the groups of some of the more major companies and see how they measure up to their experience. I also think it would be interesting to see some of the designers of the more mainstream systems forced to create all new games separate of what they are used to.

While it would be a long shot to get this to work at all I think that the only things that would stand in the way would be getting a group together, and the more important...getting at least one large company to sign up some of their designers. The benefit if it could ever get going to the indie group would be an obvious boost in sales to some degree. Well thats my late night random thought for the night I was curious to see what some people opinions on something like this would be, as it could prove to be something fun to try and organize some time in the future.

Seth,

With all due respect but bluntly, it sounds like a massive brain fart to me.

Actually, it strikes me that there must be something seriously wrong with a culture that creates such ideas. And something wrong with the train of thoughts that leads directly to making money out of it.

Some time ago, in some thread here, someone mentioned that game designers are growing to the status of rock stars. Well, now I'm starting to see what the person meant.

Also, there's already rpg.net and the swine site for all nerdy throw down purposes. They even have ads and stuff, and make money out of it.

Ok, if you meant it as a joke, sorry for being blunt. But if so, I'm not sure if it's the best forum for this.

Well no offense taken to a degree yes it was a random late night thought that probably came out a bit jumbled.

As for a couple groups of people getting together to see which group can both coherently function in a task oriented (yet fun) manor, with little to no prep and create an awesome finished product while people got to watch in...I think thats a very fun interesting concept. As for the money part said people would be taking time away from their busy schedules (which involves work) in order to perform in said competition why should they not expect fiscal gain.

As to that I don't completely understand the comment, but I see no reason why any person would not enjoy a ton of other people knowing who they are and thinking they are cool for what they do.

I will have to check that out I spend most of my time here at the forge and very rarely venture away from it...I should get out more lol.

I meant it partially as a joke while it is a possible idea it is not so much probable on the scale mentioned. I mostly was striking up discussion as to the impact this could have if it happened.

For example I personally think if (in the case a group could even be organized) enough hype around the concept was created at least some of the authors working for some of the bigger companies would join in. The indie developers involved win or lose would have the satisfaction (and possible financial yield) of getting a decent amount of attention from people who may have not ever paid their creations any attention.

Ok. Looks like it's one of those aspects of American culture I'll never be able to understand.

That's a little excessive....asking people to be cloistered to make games really isn't that awful, nor is it 'seriously wrong' in the grand scheme of things.

Anyhoot Seth, I think it sounds fun, but will most likely die with you, unless you happen to be a rebel millionaire.  I think it would be neat to see what came out of such an experiment.

I  am working on that millionaire thing -_^, as far as actually pulling it off I don't think it could possibly happen, I was more or less wondering what impact some one might think a large public event involoving some of the larger publishers this might have.
