Dan, while deciding how to handle character advancement in my own game, I did a survey of how other games did it over time. I wrote up my notes on my blog:

It focuses specifically on the mechanical aspects usually in some way related to character power, and of course is limited by what I was looking for, but you may find it helpful.

Thanks for the links Jerry. I haven't read all of those articles yet, but I can see you put a lot of time, energy, and thought into them. Great job over all. I see in the recap you have kind of summed up the components of experience mechanisms similar to how I have above in this thread.
