Hi J,

C's original roll is not the defense against B's attempt to use him as a shield. C's original roll is C's attempt to get away from being held.

These are to be treated as entirely separate phenomena, even if (as is the case) that C might go first, and if he succeeds, would render B's "use him as a shield" irrelevant.

1. Everyone rolls. The dice are on the table.

2. Look at the highest-die guy. Now look at the guy who has to oppose it. He has to choose between preserving his dice for his next action (as announced) or aborting to defend fully. The dice currently sitting on the table are not his defensive dice.

[Only when you understand this can you then move to the green-belt level of using the "full defense" option correctly.]

3. Look at the next-highest-die guy. Repeat #2. Again, whoever his action is challenging must respond, and if this target has a later position in the turn-order, he has the same choice as stated in #2. Otherwise, he rolls all available dice.

Better?

Best,
Ron

Just to double-check my own understanding, the dice on the table are only his dice if he chooses to utilize them in pursuit of the initially stated task. Otherwise, the dice he has go away and he rolls again for full defense against the "attacker's" existing set of dice. Correct?

Correct, Raven. Those dice are specifically and only slated for "escape from B's grasp." If C remains committed to that action, then he has one die to use for all (defensive/resisting) responses to others' actions, up until his turn comes along. If he aborts that action in order to deal with those other actions more effectively, then those dice (and his action in the turn order) disappear.
