hy just started GMing SotC and I have a Conman  character concept.

While not just being able to Deceive People very well he is also skilled in the art of Reading People (preferably during a Con or Poker Game)

my question is about the Con Man Stunt (p.134)

You use Deceit instead of Empathy you only gain insight into weakness unless you win the contest.
(how does that work? I thought if you win you only learn about another's weakness Aspect. So why does winning the contest change that.)

or you are otherwise in control of what Aspect is revealed(Stunts like Empathy Hearts Secret?)

This stunt essentially says you can use Deceit instead of Empathy as a social perception skill, but only to determine (assess) aspects of a character-flaw nature.

Turn to page 96, where the Empathy skill's trapping of Reading People is detailed.  The Con Man stunt says you can use that trapping with your Deceit skill, under the described limitations.

But why would winning the the Contest when using Deceit instead of Empathy allow you to asses aspects other then weaknesses.

(unless you win the contest....) p134 line 6.

Thx for the Help

That clause is just there in case you have some other effect in play that would override the default effect of the stunt to only reveal weakness.

But you're right, that parenthetical doesn't clarify, it just muddies the waters.  Ignore it. :)
