I've just been scan reading and the combat vs investigation debate sparked an idea.  You results of combat could determine strengths and weaknesses.  If the party fumble / fail an attack, then it looks like the monster is immune to those kinds of attacks.  If the party crit then we've found a weakness.

Yep, that could work. I haven't worked out how I want discovering weaknesses to come out of combat yet, just that I want it to be possible.
