Day & Night - some thoughts on an RPG

I've had some thoughts, so I thought I'd share them and see what you think. This is taking some of the ideas presented in games like Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 2, etc, A Link to the Past, and so on, with the light/dark world, but I think taking it in an interesting direction.

The idea here is this: in addition to the physical world that all the people live in, there are two other worlds, the Sunlit Realm and the Midnight Realm. They are opposites in many respects, the Sunlit having huge, sweeping castles of glass and steel floating amidst an endless sky, while the Midnight holds sprawling metropolises and is eternally dark, lit only by the stars. Each Realm seeks to destroy the other, and therein lies the problem. The only way to travel from Realm to Realm is through the physical world, at certain times of day. The world is degenerating more and more as creatures from both sides cross over to wage war. Human empires are throwing their allegiance to one side or the other, hoping to end up on the winning side and be granted power by their masters. While the creatures from other Realms are powerful, humans contain much more resistance to their abilities than creatures of the opposing Realm do. In this sense, humans are uniquely equipped to combat these outsiders.

That's the premise, anyway. While most players would say that the daytime guys are the good guys, this isn't necessarily the case. Thoughts?

Hi-

First, do you have a name I can call you by?

Second, that is a really neat premise for a game; it really struck a chord with me.  Other than that, it is really hard to offer any constructive advice without knowing more about the game. Is this a stand-alone rpg, or intended as a supplement for an existing game? Do you have any rules thoughts yet?

Looking forward to reading more about it.

Hey ken,

good to know that the premise sounds good, that's mostly what I have right now. I'm thinking that rules-wise it will be fairly light on the dice, as pretty abstract in terms of stats. I'm thinking a couple stats, maybe divided into stats aligned with day and some with night. This is intended to be stand-alone, but you could probably just as easily drop it into an existing system as a campaign setting. I've been brainstorming rules ideas and I'll get a power 19 up when I have a chance to get it all typed up.

thanks for your interest.

The only way to travel from Realm to Realm is through the physical world, at certain times of day.

This really drew my attention.

I'm guessing you can only get to the day realm from earth during daylight hours, and can only get to the night realm from earth during night-time hours.

So you'd physically have to make one jump to earth then wait a couple of hours for the sun to go up or down before launching a raid on your enemies.

Of if you wanted to make things really difficult, you might only be able to get to the sunlit realm at dawn, and the darkened realm at dusk. You'd basically have to wait 12 hours before heading on to the next location.

That's a pretty inspiring concept.

I'd thought about some ideas along these lines in the past, but had never really developed them beyond a couple of notes in my "book of big ideas that I'll have to get back to some day!!"

Keep us in the loop.
