Thanks, guys - I have enough responses. And, Jack, you'll enjoy reading my notes on magic when I put them up, methinks. Nothing like "MatheMagics" makes an appearance at all.

Clinton,

Pythagoras and his followers had a few interesting things to say about the "magical" properties of mathematics.  Perhaps you could have one particular type of magic be tied to mathematical/geometric ability.  If your resolution system were tied to different platonic solid randomizers this notion could be expounded on at the mechanical level.

Types of magical abilities possibly tied to mathematics include...

increasing/decreasing any measurement
time effects
"chaos" theory in action
entropy effects
opening dimensional travel gates
divination (numerology)

I don't know how this compares to the power scale of your game.  But it might be a possiblity to explore.

Thanks,
Mark

How to use maths?  Extreme sports like Bungee jumping.  WATCH all the rugger-bugger adrenaline addicts giving themselves a crash physics course to figure acceleration under gravity so they don't rip their own feet off!!
