Most likely Weyrth, but the idea of the setting for the Wheel of Time has its good points.

Needs it's own thread. In fact hasn't it been brought up already?
Do you know what the thread was called? Id like to read what others had to say.

While I was at "Life, the Universe and Everything" I had some fun ideas about a world I want to create and an adventure I want to write there but I started thinking about what kind of adventures Riddle of Steel players could find there. Here's the concept:
Everything is basically the same except its not Weyrth and there's no magic. However there are "wizards." Or Mages if you prefer. But there's no magic. Basically, the mages are those who were curious enough to dig up and study ancient technology buried in the ruins of ravaged cities. Long ago an apocolyptic war destroyed all the major cities and the people had to go back to more primitive ways. In fact, somewhere along the line, someone or a group of people trying to restore technology or electrical power ended up accidentally blowing up a nuclear reactor or something so that dealings with technology became forbidden. Nowadays, the technology and old ways are myth and legend. Except for the wizards. They have a limited understanding of technology but most have taught themselves how to read and try to study what they can. At least one is using his "powers" to try and take power, by giving his troops special weapons (a few guns, some grenades, maybe an RPG or two). Some people are afraid of wizards, some think their power is pretty cool (mostly those who benefit from them <wizards will help people for a price, like making fertilizer or pesticide for crops, or healing someone. But usually, whta they can do is very limited. They may have only one bottle of penecillin or one battery for a device and they know once its gone they may not be able to find more...>), and some wish they'd give of their power more freely.
The reason why no one has come to help them since the war is because they activated some kind of orbital defense grid, to try and stave off the attack of the enemy, and it did, but not before they were able to bombard the crap out of them. It is still working 100 yrs later (or however long ago it will be once I've ironed out the details). No one knows how to turn it off. In my story, the protagonist will end up crashing on the planet and seeing the wizards power for what it is. He'll have some pretty cool "magic" of his own. But he's gonna learn some sword fighting while he's there. Oh yeah, baby.
Sound cool? Does it stink? Lemme know what you think.

high potential, reminds a very little of demontech where a dark wizard accidentally summons a marine gunnery sargent instead of a powerful demon like he planned and science and tech are mixed with magic and demons to the point that no one can differentiate one from the other. my favorite was a cigarette lighter they called a fire salamander that had to be fed a special food or he would die and no longer make fire.
little things like that could be a lot of fun for players to figure out. mathces are another goodie and flashlights of course can be fun. And anyone who saw Army of Darkness wuld love to introduce a chainsaw and a "boomstick" into a culture like you described.

You should most certainly read "The Seventh Sword" by Dave Duncan.
You just described his world almost exactly, except the "wizards" don't try to help others.

Aww crap- Well I should have guessed someone else had beaten me to this idea. Thanks for the tip Brian. I've wanted to read a story like this so it will be interesting to see what Dave has for me. If it s not how I envisioned though... I'm gonna steal all his ideas and write a better novel.
Heh.

Quote from: Salamander
Not up and running yet... but a "what if" version of Renaissance Europe and the surrounding lands.
Speaking of which, Salamander, I took some initiative and already did up a character for this. I hope you find him appropriate! FWIW folks, this would be my first TROS character... I've only GM'd so far.
