Correct in both versions? That had to be tedious to code.

No, it was easy to code, I just rooted around until I found words that were in the same place in both books. Although the paragraphs are often in different places on the page, they often end up on the same page, and so word 3 in paragraph 1 after a certain heading might still be the same in both versions of the book, even if it's in a different place on the page, etc.

By the way, for those without Windows, I've had it confirmed that the CharGen can be launched in Unix (well, Debian anyway).

mark this as a report of complete sucess running under wine (Debian testing, Wine 20030115 to be precise).

Speaking of UNIX -- is there any chance that the TRoS tools will someday be ported to MacOS X?  I can run them under emulation but... well... it is rather unpleasant.

I don't have the coding skills to do any port.  Does some kind Mac user in the Forum want to step up to the plate?

You buy me a mac, and I'll port them.

I keep getting an error message when I try to auctually start the character generator.

"your installation fo the Riddle of Steel Character Generator appears to be corrupt (perhaps you have been playing around with the .INI files?)
please reinstall"

I have installed the program several times, and uninstalled and reinstalled.  And I continue to get this message.  Any idea what this means and how to fix it?

Sincerely,
Jester

What language edition of Windows are you using? I had an email from a guy using the Swedish version of Windows, which installs everything into a "c:\program" directory instead of "c:\program files" for some bizarre reason.

Anyway, that error message will be spat out if the program cannot find the various .ini files (skills.ini, help.ini and newequip.ini), and it looks for them in "c:\program files\ros", so this error message means it cannot find them in that location OR you have manually edited those files and corrupted one or more of them.

So that's what you need to check. If your version of Windows is putting the software elsewhere (or you have moved the files elsewhere), you'll need to manually create a "c:\program files\ros" directory and put the .ini files in there (it doesn't actually matter where the .exe is, just the .ini's). This is something I'll fix when/if I do an update version - I never knew that some versions of windows use anything other than "program files" as their default program files directory.

Yes, it was somewhat lazy programming by me to assume that c:\program files\ros would always be the right location, basically because I used the same location for the Combat Sim and Damage Tables software.

Brian, this thing is great.  You did a great job!  All my characters are Australian!

Thanks for that quick response Brian, awesome customer support for a product I didn't even pay for.....a labor of love

OK I understand what you are Saying about the .ini files need to be in the Program files/ ROS directory

they are, and I haven't been messing about with those .ini files
This is strange

I am using North american version of Windows XP

confused and bewildered,

Jester, email me the install.log file (which you will find in the c:\program files\ros directory. Also, send me your help.ini file (from the same directory).

I was pretty careful that all of the questions it asks are correct in whatever version of the manual you have, so you don't have to worry about that.

And it should only ask you about once every 10 times or so that you load it up, so it's not too intrusive, hopefully.

Brian.

Well, existing at all is too intrusive for my taste. Can I get a special version with that feature disabled? :)

I mean, you know I own TROS. :)

You should get the random features thing working with the American measurements. Or at least give me a button to switch back. :)

But I like the generator so far.

Brian,

Well done! I have already begun using the CharGen in making Characters for my pending TRoS Campaign and am finding it to be very useful! I can hardly wait 'till I have the time to transfer a copy to my lap-top for truly portale gaming capacity. I also like the fact you can port characters from CharGen to Combat Sim.

Salamander, glad you're enjoying it.

Bob, you're just trying to rile me up now... :-)

Oh, by the way, it's been pointed out to me that Angharad/Picti doesn't correctly add nationality modifiers (thanks Jason). I have fixed this, but you wont see the fix until I'm sure I have caught all the bugs and can put them all in one release. In the meantime, if you want an Angharad/Picti character you'll have to add/subtract the correct modifiers after the fact, in the edit screen.

Never mind. It's a minor issue really.
