The way I've mostly played is around a table. When I GMed a Star Wars RPG, we played around my dining room table, or once, around the girl's dining room table. It could usually fit about 6 people around the table, and we got a lot done in those sessions.
Recently, I got some of the group back together after one year, and we played a game of LOTR. It went pretty well, but no one was really into it like they once were. The new players that were with us loved it though. There, we played at the local Game Store. It was pretty nice, since you could walk over and open up any books for inspiration.
When my friend broke his leg, I went over to his house, and played 1 on 1 Star Wars, on his coffee table. That was really relaxed, and we would be stopping all the time to talk. Fun times. Those are my experiences, anyway.
