I believe this mechanic was also used in a game called Don't Look Back, only using 3d6 as the BD instead of 1d6.

Also, Sergio Mascarenhas independently described exactly this mechanic (using almost your terminology) on his RPG.NET collumn "Rules Lawyer for Free." Sergio used d20s instead of d6s.
