CCGs question

Can we discuss card games in the Indie Game Design forum? I ask because I have a card game (like Yu Gi Oh or Magic:The Gathering) I've been working on since high school that I'd like to discuss, but I don't know if it's proper for this site.

Hello,

Damn, that's a Pandora's Box, isn't it?

Reluctantly, I'm gonna say "no." But I'm open to discussion about it, so if anyone wants to chime in one way or another, please feel free.

Best,
Ron

I'd like to suggest that the Forge have some recommended resources for non-RPG game design, since it seems that we have some members interested in such things. Ron and Clinton: I'll start to compile a list of such fora that could be linked to, if you think that's appropriate.

I realize that this isn't just a touchy-feely community chat board thingie. And because of that, the focuse we find here is a good thing. And I would hate to see CCG (especially) or boardgame design conversations clutter these groups, but if there was a seperate topic-group, sort of (but sort of not) off-topic that related to non-RP, game design, I'd take part. There's a lot of smart folks here that also play other kinds of games. It would in some ways be nice to have a place to house the tie-in conversations like "is compter game X an RPG?" and "how do the L5R CCG and RPGs relate, and would it be cooler if they were systematically reflective?"

my $.02,

Chris

We've discussed CCG RPGs before. Like Dragonstrike (sp?). So it's not the card format that's inappropriate, it's just that they're not RPGs. Right?

That's right, Mike. It's the RPG thing that I'm reluctant to ste[ beyond, at least not much.

Not that we have a really good definition of the damned things, but what can you do ...

For example, I reviewed Bedlam, which is a smidgeon outside my personal notion of what an RPG is. But I think that its content, like Once Upon a Time, offers a lot for role-players to think about. At present, all such gray zones should be designated yea-or-nay by me, although (given the absence of said definition) I'll probably call for comments about it.

Best,
Ron

Hmm...some very good points here. So, is anyone aware of a site where they do discuss designing CCGs? I didn't know about the Forge Forums until I was referred to this site by someone on the Planet AD&D forum boards.

Honestly, I've found a LOT of resources here that helps me out with my CCG publishing and I don't see any CCG discussion going on at all~ Nice thing is, business end of it, CCG and RPG people are in a lot of the same boat...if you could throw up a forum for 'CCG Design', a lot of the other resources and advice floating about concerning demos, publishing and what not is really good even if it isn't meant for it.

Hi daMoose,

Yeah, I agree about that. I hope the Forge's resources and discussions are useful to independent publishers of all kinds: board games, CCGs, books, whatever. And I'm even open to discussions which concern these non-game things, as long as role-playing is involved somehow - even just as a basis for comparison.

But the line has to be drawn somewhere, and "wholly non-RPG" would be it, I think.

Best,
Ron
