This kind of fight is kinda silly, since both knights would ditch the shields and go half-swording with bastard swords. There's not much point trying to whack with the measly arming sword, it just doesn't cut mail.

But since you asked for it.. The knights have all stats at 5, with proficiency 8, so their full combat pool is 13 minus armor penalties (leaving them at 8). Knight 1 has a large shield and an arming sword and clearly needs 4 margin of success to injure through mail with a cutting attack; knight 2 has a large shield and bastard sword one-handed.

[code]Have at you!
You are indeed brave, sir knight, but the fight is mine.
Oh, had enough eh?

K1 thinks he can slice K2's head clean off from the aggressive stance. But K2 is sneaky, and takes 'attack' defence. With a bit of luck, he steals the initiative.. let's see what happens

Knight 1 gains +2CP for his aggressive stance
Knight 1 must pay an additional 1 dice to attack because he's out of range.
Knight 1 takes a swing at Knight 2's body (downward diagonal) with 7 dice...
Please select Knight 2's defense...

Knight 2 thrusts at Knight 1's head with 4 dice...

K1 got his face pierced, lost his attack, got 4 pain dice and 8 blood loss. With 8 blood loss, you're as good as dead. Game over. I did the same thing easily with a simultaneous block/strike.

very nice fight overdrive , i need to learn the steal initiative tactic (i never try it ) . Do you think 10th century sword ( like norman sword ) can thrust like that ? I read this was only cut sword and not very sharp , perhaps i should use blunt for this kind of sword.I play a lot in 10 th century so no half swording but chain was the usual armor and it's very hard to pass chain with 1 hand cut sword as you said.
I think blankshield fight is fast but pretty unusual because the 2 knights look like berzerker and dont care to die.
Thank you for your help guys .

I don't think that you understand then. With two players you reveal your dice simultaneously. So if I choose red, then there's a chance that you have done so, too. It's not that I want to get caught in that situation, but there I am, and now I have to make the best of it.

Look at it another way - the only way to ever avoid Red/Red is to never throw red yourself. But if that's the best option, then we'll both throw white forever, and we'll just circle endlessly. So at some point, either somebody throws red, or you have to taunt your opponent into doing it. If/when you throw red, he may too, and then you have the situation above. Happens all the time in play.

In battles that go a few rounds what happens is that somebody eventually decides to do something desperate - often the more armored guy who is losing CP faster due to endurance (are you playing with that on now?). When he does so, then either he'll be successful and win, or he'll fail and lose.

You can say that Blankenshield's combat looks unrealisitcally risky, but yours look unrealistically cautious. Which is realistic, but dull. As somebody mentioned, in play things never get to these points because someone has and presses the advantage. Essentially, you're creating situations that don't happen in play, and then worry that they will. Try playing the game, and you'll see that your fears are unfounded.

Moreover, I suggest that you go to the IRC chat room, or do a combat with somebody here online (and use the honor system or a dice server to do the rolls). I think you'd quickly see that the best tactics are ones that are more decisive than those that you're using. That is, you'll get beaten soundly. Proving that the more realistic tactics produce shorter fights, typically.

The other possibility is that everyone here who plays is really bad at the game, and we just haven't found the ultimate strategies yet that produce these really long battles. Which do you think is more likely?

Mike

When your opponent loses five dice you can effectively declare victory.

One would think I can now just finish him off, but no!
For the next six rounds I bore witness to the greatest feat of die rolling and full evades ever done by a man who was down five dice in a fight to the death. Try as he might stephen could not roll enough successes to bring him down.

This was not an isolated incident for me, and while I think the combat simulator is good for getting an idea of how combat works - it can do some wonky things with die rolls that I virtually never see in actual play...

Anyhoo, it eventually all came to a glorious victory when stephen actually rolled some successes...

Viking and Norman sword thrusting

Unless you're talking about an executioner's sword, most two-edged swords do have a sharp tip that you can thrust with. The issue is that the classic Viking and Norman swords are balanced so that cutting is easier and does more damage (witness the lower cut ATN). They also won't slip into gaps that a rapier would. However, if the foe's face is unarmored and the rest covered by mail or plate, the face thrust becomes a viable option (as the above combats show) if you set it up.

This is realistic. In SCA combat I have won some bouts with my primarily-cut-balanced arming sword by only throwing cuts until the opponent starts blocking wide or relaxing (in TROS terms saving his dice for the next exchange), feinting another cut, and turning it into a fast face thrust that isn't as powerful as the cut would have been -- but with the face thrust it doesn't have to be.

Lokdu, you're miss interpreting your data.

Its not that "thrust is the way to go".

What your data shows is
"hitting him where he doesn't have any armor" is the way to go.

Thrusting to the head happens to be working for you because a pot helm doesn't have a visor and so you get more face hits with a thrust to the head than with a cut to the head.

One of the knights in the example could half sword his arming sword and the other one could have held his axe in two hands. Both of those options would work out.

Besides, you could stab through someones face with an iron rod. Flesh and bone is soft, steel is hard. Part of the irrational reason why I dont like metals IRL ~~

Stupidly one huge option I forgot to mention (and I don't think is available on the Simulator...is that you can spend 1 die as an activation cost to add one to damage. This is a good way to do extra damage in a situation where you're reasonably certain of getting a hit.

Lokdu, you're miss interpreting your data.

Its not that "thrust is the way to go".

What your data shows is
"hitting him where he doesn't have any armor" is the way to go.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
What i wanted to say is thrust in face look like the only way to go if you have a arming sword (not really good against chain ) and wants to injure a knight with full chain and pot helm. Face is the only target without armor you can choose . hands can be targeted sometime but i have seen a lot of chain armor with chain on hands too !

Combat over!

I tried some tricky stuff. Part of the problem with equal opponents both trying to be tactically sound is that, well, they're equal. Without two separate tacticians things will always be somewhat standoffish.

In this you'll see I took a few risks (some worked), made a few mistakes, and made some good calls.

I also noticed that the Stop Short maneuver is more powerful in the sim than in play, but that's alright.

Thank you very very much Jack . I have done a lot of fight (around 30 i think ) who looked like this one and was begining to think i was dumb and cant understand how TROS works .
So with equal opponents and good armor fight cant be short except if 1 fighter try something very risky and accept to die if his foolish action fail.
If nobody is ok to try suicidal action (berzerk gooooooooo) the fight will be END contest or will begin to move when 1 opponent will botch or will have a crasy bad or good dice roll. This kind of fight can be see in the movie "duellist" (ridley scott ) except they dont have armor ! this movie show the more realistic duel i ever seen , where you can see each move can be deadly , like TROS most of the time .
I'm ok the kind of fight i was trying to simulate is not usual (same skill , same armor and no real context ) , look like ordalie (god judgement) or honor duel .
I wonder how fight would be if you declare attack but not how many dice you are puting in , i'm not sure in fight for life and death you can really see if you are under a 5 dice or a 8 dice attack. With no dice declaration and feint how do you think fights would be .
I begin to play rpg when i was 15 year old (i'm 32 now) i'm crasy about rpg and have read a ton of it and i want to say TROS is really different and exciting . For me it's a must have RPG because he show you how credible fight need to be , like joly roger game swashbuckler too .
Last thing i want to say , dont be hurt if i dont speack very well , i'm french and my english skill is really bad when i need to speack or write . I read it far better especially when its RPG :-)

RE: come on for a knight contest !!

Lokdu, you keep making a logical error. You're assumption is that anything risky is suicidal, or "berzerking". But it's not. Yes it means that the fight might end sooner with somebody hurt badly, but that's what you want, right?

My point is, let's say that I told you that if you went with a very non-risky tactic that you'd win only 50% of the time. But that if you took a risk at the right point, that you'd end up winning 75% of the time. What would be the more foolish act? To flip the coin, or to take things into your own hands and try to win?

If/when a player notes that a battle looks like it could drag on, and that they are going to loose out due to END loss because of their heavier armor, they suddenly have a lot of incentive to take more risks and end the combat now. Because if they play tentatively, they have nearly a 100% chance of losing in the long run.

My point in asking you to play against some of the more agressive players here like Jake (you do realize that he's the designer), is that you'll see that playing it safe is far from the best tactic. You have to take risks to win consistently. This is reflected in the real life tactics. The manuals will all tell you that if you just lay back that the opponent will get the advantage of the tempo, and then you're as good as dead.

Mike

Sure if its 75% win versus 50% i will be far more offensif . Even if its 51 % versus 50% i will because 1% more to stay alive is good :)

lol

So you hit the guy twice, and then decide to use a Stop Short, and fail to press the advantage? After the first two exchanges (heck after the first some would argue), you had knight 2 toying with knight 1. He could have put him away at any time, it seems to me. That's pretty mean. :-)

I try to learn how TROS works , it's not easy when you have just read the book 15 days ago and when you are not english or american . I think this fight is much better than what i was doing at the begining , but i can understand you think it's sucky fight. I'm not a TROS veteran player like you , and what i was looking for was advice not really laugh .
I can understand you find this post is not interesting , so i will stop to post my 'poor fights' , i will read the fights from other people if they wants post some, so i will learn without you need to 'lol' again.

Can I just say that it totally rocks to see everyone using the combat sim. Real buzz.

One of these days I must get around to getting the next version done :-)

Brian.
