I'm at the point where I'm thinking some art would be good to put in the Ongoing Homebrew, and I'm broke. So I'm looking for free or cheap images I don't have to steal.

I've looked at clipart.com and other such places, and almost every picture included is of a ridiculously cartoonish nature. I don't need da Vinci level ability, but something a little more detailed and realistic would be good -- I'm looking for images like those used in the GURPS and FUDGE books: black-and-white, non-setting/genre-specific, of competent quality without needing to be spectacular.

Anybody got any sites they can recommend?

Hi,

If you want to spend a little money check out Dover Publications. They have tons of good stuff and reasonably priced.

I particularly recommend those in the Louis J. Porter "Devil's Workshop" series. These are B&W images grouped by genre, and can be used by independent RPG publishers without a licencing fee. Each one is only $6, so the price is good as well.

Go to clipart.com
Type in the subject you are looking for.
When it throws up the first page of cartoony garbage, look up in the corner above the group of thumbnails (either top or bottom right) and you'll find page numbers.
Click on the last page and work your way forward from there.

I have no idea why, but all the good stuff is in the back.

And much of the Dover material is in there, without the silly 10 piece maximum that most of the books have.

I can totally confirm Calvin's process. I've found great stuff on clipart.com, but never anywhere near the front of search results.
