PDF size

Last night I emailed Shojuo Story to my dad who was good enough to create a pdf on his home pc. The pdf is about 15 meg in size, as a microsoft publisher document the file was 9 meg.

There are 17 jpeg pictures in the 36 page document, the pictures are about 60 kilobytes each. There's a complex side bar graphic on every page, about 400 kilobytes.

The PDF seems enormous, should I be aiming lower or is that actually a reasonable size? Anyone got any tips on how to shrink it?

Cheers,

Tony

It depends on what you're using it for. If you're sending it to a printer or printing from it yourself, I don't see any real problem with it. If you're intending people to download it, you're right, it's probably a bit large. Acrobat (and other pdf renderers) all have options for compression: have your father use text compression (it's just a check-box), and put the image compresion up, maybe reducing each image to 150dpi or so. That should help.
