I put together a couple of play aids that you might find useful.

One is a 36-page booklet of biblical quotes on various topics relevant to Dogs ("Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him." and stuff like that).

The other is an 8-page book of biblical and period names. Both are available as formatted PDF files and raw text. I made fancy covers for them as well, just because.

I think my absolute favorite part was the name significance stuff. You can now point and say: "Yeah, my guy's name is Caleb, and that's rather appropriate since he is a dog..." And feel all cool and stuff...

If anybody had the time or inclination to find the meanings of the names I skipped (not hard, just time-consuming), I'd be delighted to update the document.

Similarly, if there are cool proverbs, parables, and sayings that can be culled from the Book of Mormon, I'd be glad to include them. I wasn't able to find a collection online.

BTW, I included the unformatted text file for folks who can't access PDFs. The PDFs are much easier to read and more attractive.

Here's the Internet Sacred Text Archive, by the way. It's got the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, the Doctrine and Covenants, a half dozen Bibles or so, and a million others.

These play aids seriously rock! I just printed out and bound both booklets, and they look great. I've been carrying around a names book with a list of 19th c. names with my Dogs stuff, but yours looks much, much better. I also have a bible and copy of the book of Mormon on hand, but your subject sorted quotes are 100 times more useful. Thanks for going through this effort and making it available to everyone. You've done a great job.

Thanks for your kind words, John. I'm thinking about doing a similar booklet to help with place names. And if I can find a list of proverbs and sayings from Mormon literature, I'll add them to the ones I have.

Only because it's near and dear to my heart (see the Dogs in the IRC game), your entry for Jezebel (wicked) is the common association, but not actually the meaning. The meaning is "follower of idols".

She was the wife of Ahab, king of Israel in the old testament, persecuted yhwh's people and was generally a pagan and idolater. She was thrown out a window and - get this - was eaten by dogs.

It's a *great* name for a Dog, if I say so myself. :)

Awesome. I'll change that, too - this stuff was culled from Web sources and surely has other mistakes.

I consciously left out some definitions, BTW, like the many names that default to "Christ-like" or place names.

Here's some quotes from various Mormon scripture that I've ganked for use in Dogs. Several of them should be useful for general Dogs play.

Doctrine and Covenants

The Scriptures Internet Edition are the texts that the LDS website refers to.

I assume they do not try to make the language more accessible, that is, lessen its appeal to DitV users.

I just updated my list of names to include 140 or so Mountain People names. They are actually Cheyenne, from some land allotment documents I found, and I included both the original phonetic transcription and an English counterpart. I also added a bunch of unusual 19th century names to the general lists.

Totally awesome work on those play aids! They look really good and you can tell that you spent a lot of time on them. I cobbled them together last weekend in preparation for my first Dogs game. The other players were totally envious!
They are great, but man they took a while to make. I live in Japan so we use a4 size paper here, so I had to trim and cut and hack to make it fit together. As I was doing it, I was thinking to myself, I would totally pay good money to have these made for me.
Anyways, keep up the great work and know that your hard work is having results all over the world! :)

Thanks very much. Glad they worked out for you! I had fun making them; they scratched my Dogs itch while I tried to round up some players. I'd love to hear anecdotes of how the "quotations" book gets used in play.
