The edge mechanic for when you draw in successes during a complication...

Am I right in thinking that because this rewards players who draw in complications, that its encouraging you to:

Match, not try and out do, your opponent with complication dice (your best chance of drawing is to both roll the same number of dice)

Keep dice to a minimum (you've got a better chance of a draw, the fewer dice you both roll)

Cheers,

Tony

Actually no. Although it certainly would do that for people trying to "game" the system.

The actual intent was simply to do something that made ties more exciting than simply have a roll off. The idea that you got the number rolled on the Edge die in Coins regardless of success or failure meant that there was the chance for huge windfall in Coins even for the eventual loser of the Complication. Those Coins were then to be used to narrate the climactic "hanging on a razors edge" moment.

In practice, the tension of the build up and roll off and "oh man a tie..." seems to provide enough excitement and in most games I've played we completely forgot about the special edge die rule.

The plan for the next printing is to eliminate the edge die rule and just give the side with the highest sum an extra die to roll for the reroll with no extra rules.
