Hi folks. Mike Holmes mentioned this in the Lessons from playing Uni on Wiki? thread. But I wanted to announce it so it could be seen. We're trying to start up again.
We've solved (I hope) the technology issues. The posting method is now as simple as writing your contribution and signing it with your name and the coins you've spent. The site automatically tracks things after that.
To play all you have to do is Register at the site.
To check us out come and look here:
Universalis Arena 4
Pregame discussion is now open in my site's Forum
We've been hoping for a while to get a critical mass of people (like 20 or so) so if you have any interest in playing Uni, come and get involved!
best

Trevis, that looks awesome. I'm loving how each iteration of Uni via Wiki gets more intuitive to use. Well done.

Hey Trevis...speaking as someone with 0 knowledge of how a wiki really works...is what you're doing something that could be packaged?
Is it a set of tips and guidelines on how to set up a Wiki for effective Uni play based on your experience that any Wiki guru could follow? Or is is actual lines of code that you've written that someone could cut and paste into their own site?
In other words a) is it something that would be worth while to host and make available as support on the uni web page? or b) something that could actually be distributed as an applet or the like?

Hi Ralph,
I'm not writing any real programming in terms of lines of code, I'm just using the capabilities of the wiki software, which is a fairly full featured one. Almost all the stuff I'm doing is either using the search capability or the spreadsheet functions. The tricky part is writing the search strings (regular expressions) to find stuff and index it.
So if other people use the same software (which is freely available) I could certainly package a set up group of pages (just a bunch of text files) that have all the appropriate search strings and such for this kind of thing. All anyone would have to do is set up the software and drop in the pages. We could also possibly include some tips for organizing and such too.
I'd be happy to look into the capabilities of other wiki software too, to see what is translatable to them. So far I haven't found anything else with as many features as TWiki. I'd be intersted in seeing if a similar setup could be achieved with a Content Management Software like Drupal too.
I'd still like to learn some scripting language like php or perl and write a uni specific wiki application but that's a ways off for me. I'm not really a programming guy, just a mid-level unix/web geek hacking my way through this stuff. If there are other code heads around that would want to tackle it I'm sure we could give them a lot of suggestions.
So if you think it would be valuable to others, the stuff I have wouldn't be hard to put into a package. Both as advice and/or as an actual package containing preset, TWiki specific, web pages that people could use.
best,
Trevis

An update-- we've just begun the tenet phase. Now's a good time to get in and influence the game from the ground floor.
