TSoY Tinkering Urges

I played the first half of a Planescape TSoY game tonight; it wasn't meaty enough for an AP thread but it stirred things up in my noggin.

This game makes me want to tinker.  Shiny conflict resolution system, bringing down the pain, Keys and Secrets and Keys and Keys and Keys and the creative commons license.

I'm fascinated with the idea of how Keys can define a game, as can how you replenish your die pools.

Keys for players helping the GM out.  The Setting key is for the player who gives helpful tidbits about the world, just little details.  The Name key is for the player who comes up with cool names for NPC's so the GM doesn't have to.  The plot Stakes Helper key is for someone who helps both sides agree on stakes.

They are keys, handed out around the table to the non-GM players, free of charge, giving players XP for contributing in the ways they want to.  There could be a rotation system, unless a nice groove is agreed to.

I want to add in Duel of Wits comprimise to Bringing Down the Pain.

I want to make a YA Fantasy game out of it, changing around replenishing the pools a bit and adding The Key of the Crush and the Key of True Love and the Key of the Quest that allows the Quester to hand out XP to PC's who help them out on the quest along the way.

You can say something with Keys...when the Key of Vengeance allows the person who gets that key to give 5 xp to the player whose PC talks them out of walking that bloody road but still 2 XP for helping them walk it.

It is a nifty game.

Preach it, brother Judd. If my next game project is not Solar System driven, someone needs to slap me.

Thanks, both you guys! I really wanted the engine of this game to be open for tinkering (I mean, I tell you how to do it in the book), so I'm glad you both picked up on that.

Judd, your recent posts have made me really want to play TSOY again. Now I have to start yet another group.

Way cool ideas Judd.

How about this?

Jim: "What if Aaron's stakes are X and yours are Y?"

Aaron: "Nice!"

Judd (GM in this instance): "Great!"

Judd (still GM): "Jim, take an xp."

I feel like if you give titles for a night, even though some people hit better at certain parts of the order, it may falter.  More importantly, if the Stakes dude has a name, he's gonna spit it out.

Now I know you wouldn't say, "Sorry Aaron, you've got Setting Duty tonight, no xp for that name."  I'm just sayin let it all flow like it does normally.

I think wether or not something is xp 'worthy' will be determined by the table's reaction.

Keys rock.  Secret of The Flying Leap ROCKS :D  TSoY is coooool beans.

My interest is to make contributing part of the rules.

I've got a Young Adult Fantasy Fiction setting in my head with a game that I think would be a great first RPG for 8-13 year olds but would play well with adults too.  It is coming together in my head.  I might tinker with it a bit over break, see if I can get something to worth playtesting for winter gaming.  We'll see.
