Clarity vs. Teachers
Clarity is defined as:
"your mastery of the occult worldview, and also your status among occultists. The more confidently immersed you are in thinking like a cthonic god, the more status you have and authority you command among occultists."
So, how does it fit that, in resolutions vs. Teachers: "The GM rolls an opposing pool of d6's equal to the occultist character's Resistance plus Clarity ..."
Why does Clarity work against a character here?

Hey Chris,
An excellent question.
My first formula had the GM just rolling the character's Resistance. Adding Clarity was a rule change suggested by Eero Tuovinen after Teachers proved too vulnerable in Victor Gijsbers' playtest to new occultists (who all had low Resistance). Now, Clarity in the formula ensures that Teachers are always a step ahead of your own progress. And I confess that the revised formula is not well rationalized in my head. Does it make sense that they're Teachers until proven otherwise, that a Teacher exceeds your own occult development until an action on your part, a successful Status Change against him, undercuts that? When you lose to him, it's not objectively because you're less capable. It's because his status hindered you. We just don't understand that until afterwards.
Or...how would you rework the formula?

Oh, that makes perfect sense. It's as if you're trying to break past the limits of your own Clarity. And, since a point of Clarity is the reward for success, that makes it all the more logical.
