a scene of evil
Voyeurs of evil, I offer you this scene from the second session of the ongoing IRC playtest. The player character is Alexander Cherry's Heqa, who Alex has cast as the self-declared god of an unnamed desert nomad. The setting is "ancient egypt....old kingdom, while the pyrmids are still being contructed." Alex requested a scene with a Rival. I chose Nebhotep, the young Underling of Eero Tuovinen's death cult character Baknefer, decided that the nomad Victim's name is Sanipu, and framed the following:
<PaulCzege> The desert night is chill. And the stars are clear above. Lacking fire, Sanipu lies among his sheep (as protection against the cold), on the shelf of a rocky outcropping in the hills. And is nearly asleep when a figure flushed with power silently descends from above: Nebhotep. He has begun to push the limits of his humanity, from careful study of Baknefer. And now comes to exert his crass superiority over the peaceful shepherd.
<PaulCzege> Sanipu recoils from the heated air surrounding Nebhotep. "Kneel before your new God," screams Nebhotep.
<PaulCzege> "If you would live, make a sacrifice to me of these worthless beasts!"
<PaulCzege> Sanipu cowers against the cold rock, and rubs frantically at his frog-shaped amulet. "God Heqa, help me now in my hour of need."
And it played out like this:
<Heqa> Not even bothering to get up from his place of rest, Heqa waves his hand absently, expecting to send Nebhotep crashing down from the sky.
<Heqa> On each finger, one can see gaudily-large jewels on engraved platinum rings. A hint of a gold bracelet peeks from beneath his robes.
<Heqa> #roll 3[1d8]

<PaulCzege> #roll 2[1d6]

<Heqa> Nothing happens for a long moment. The hand clenches into a fist, but the body doesn't move. "Heqa, please," Sanipu cries, but Nebhotep cuts him off. "Heqa does not hear your pleas! Your beasts, now."
<Heqa> "Heqa," Sanipu weeps, over and over and he slaughters his sheep, "why have you forsaken me?"
<Heqa> Heqa closes his ears to Sanipu's weeping. Obviously, Sanipu had lost faith in Heqa, or else his powers would have swept Nebhotep away like the pretender he is. Sanipu will pay for this betrayal... yes, he will.
That die roll is a failure vs. a Rival, resulting in derogation. (Note the Fetishizing Alex does for the extra die.)
