Hi folks,

I ran a Sorcerer session a couple weeks ago and we hit a bit of a snag at one point. A PC in a fight had had his Stamina dropped into the negative range, and made a Will roll to get Stamina to use in the customary way. However, we weren't sure if his demon's Boost Stamina would do anything useful.

Does Boost work on 1) the current, on-the-sheet Stamina, 2) the effective Stamina, as set up by the Will roll, or 3) something else?

We ended up going with 1, but that seems kinda blah to me. What's the word on this?

Hi,

It'll help to recall that Stamina (or any other score) cannot go into the negatives, only to zero. As a secondary issue, damage applies to everything, not just Stamina, but that may not matter in this case. We'll stick with Stamina as the score of interest.

In your example, let's say the player succeeded in the Will roll by (oh) two victories. So now the character has two dice to use for whatever action he or she wants to take, in this case a Stamina-based one.

Now the demon hits the character with the Boost Stamina for (say) 5 Power. So now the character has seven dice to use for that action.

It works the same in reverse order, also totalling seven dice. Also, either of those two effects in isolation work as described here, such that the Will roll by itself results in two dice to use, or the Boost Stamina by itself results in five dice to use.

Best, Ron
