Create two NPCs alongside him -- say, a Mentor who dies at some point during character creation (the PC's phase 5, for example), and a Villain whose past is intertwined with the hero's.

Thanks a bunch-a.

What I clumsily did was to create an NPC hero & "collectively" create (me & the player) another NPC hero!!  But I hoped a better solution would be forthcoming int the forums.
