I've just read through A flower for Mara, and I don't see the link between the Grief the players choose and their Flower Soliloquys on the one hand, and the fictional characters and their story on the other

is there none, or did I miss it?

There is no formal connection per se. However, I've noticed a tendency for players to weave their Grief into the story of their characters. It's certainly not required, but it is an option.
