TROS got released about a week or two early, it seems, and is allready in stores. From what I hear, it's doing very well. For those of you that haven't gotten yours yet, go and get it!

Excellent. I'll have to thumb through the revised vers. and see if there's any merit in buying another copy, as I've already got most of the important errata and changes printed out. I probably will, though.

It's like this. I thought I was going, but then realized that it wasn't cost effective to go. Then Bob, the Imperial Outpost manager, emails me and says that they're flying me down and putting me in a hotel. "Cool."

Then, Bob gets called away to Florida and doesn't manage to put anyone else on the case, so my ticket is never arranged, and I don't get to go...

So no, I'm not going to Hexacon. On the other hand, the owner of I.O. felt really bad and still wants to bring me out for a series of demos or equivalent, so I'll still probably be visiting pheonix, I just don't know when.

Just thought I'd mention that TROS has reached UK shops too, which means I finally have a copy :) From what I've read so far, I'm liking it a lot.

That's wonderful! Remember, if TROS is in a store that isn't on my "the best" list of retailers carrying the game, send me their address, phone, and web info, and I'll update my page.

I got my copy of TROS from the Dream Wizards in Rockville, MD. They are the largest and best known RPG shop in the MD DC area. The had two copies of TROS (one now :)

Obviously, being in the DC area, this shop services a very large area. And they tend to carry lesser known games (they even carry Hârn stuff). Good shop.

Well, I got my copy from the excellent Wayland's Forge, in Birmingham. But as it's carried by a major distributor (Esdevium? Correct me if I'm wrong here Jake), most FLGS should be able to order it in.

My local gaming store got it in less than a week after I mentioned it.

The owner looked at me funny when I mentioned that the copy I was buying would be my third.

"But, it's got a new sorcery section and revised maneuvers"

Looks good, though there are still a few typos. Those are mostly forgiven, though, because the appendix is much more readable :)

I'm in the Midwest (Indiana) and my FLGS is having a hard time getting in a single copy. Damn the bad luck!

Frankly, your store has no excuse. The Riddle of Steel is available from most major distributors, and if for some reason that seems like a problem, the owner can order from Tundra Sales Organization, the fulfilment house.

The store guy knows exactly who the major distributors are for that area, as well as Alliance, the national distributor. He also knows who Tundra is. Again, there's no reason on this earth why he can't get a copy sent to the store, within a week, with a single phone call.

Sometimes retailers need a little customer insistence to get games that they aren't familiar with, or that they had previously decided not to order, or that they happened to miss in the catalogues. But there's no way that any store can be having "trouble" getting TROS.

Apparently, I'm experiencing the "blame game," because the owner is blaming Alliance for the delay and not mentioning any of these other distributors. Plus, I think he has only ordered one copy for me, despite Jake's recommendation to retailers on the website.

Well anyway, I'll keep pestering him, and thanks for the info.

I'm trying to find this too and having just as little luck. My FLGS, Playing Games and Leisure Games all had one of two stories: either a) they'd never heard of it, or b) they had ordered it but had only recieved a small number of copies which had already sold, and they had not recieved their reorder.

Can anyone else suggest where I might get it from in the UK? Not even amazon.com have heard of it and they're normally a weapon of last resort...

I finally got mine on Friday. I haven't had as much time as I need to thoroughly examine it, but that's to be expected. I do really like what I see though. Great job Jake!

Jake can correct me on this if I'm wrong, but I think that any book in the hands of the distributors at this moment is the second printing. I think people may be confusing the retailers etc by talking about the "revised edition," because they'll be looking for those exact words on the cover and not seeing them.

Again, if I'm not mistaken, all 300 copies of the original printing were sold either at cons, at a very few stores through direct sale from the publisher (Jake), or on-line through the website. So again, any book that's going the traditional distributor-to-retailer route is from the second printing.

To be very, very sure - look at the afterword, which is quite clear in explaining what the second printing contains.

I saw a hardcover copy today in my FLGS here in Copenhagen, Denmark. I didn't have the money to pick it up, though.

Any and every copy of TROS in any stores is "revised edition." More accurately, it's the "only edition," and that little 300-copy run was the "pre-release edition."

Either way, it sold out a looong time ago, and only the newest printing is available.

Low magic? Only in terms of quantity, not quality.

Generally speaking, I think thats what the term usually means; low quantity of magic.

The reason is because of how a lot of people play games like D&D and make sure everyone has a +1 weapon by level 3, +2 by level 6, etc. Be it table top or computer RPGs, people don't even blink at the rather (for most settings) ludicrous concept of a magic shop. When a setting that actually can have an economy of magical weapons (nevermind non-lethal items) is the standard or at least something the gaming public is familiar with, TROS will be called low magic, because in comparison, it is.

The other thing that can make an RPG sometimes get the label of 'low-magic setting' is when the magic system does not encourage player characters who are spellcasters. Pendragon's aging and sleeping rules are pretty unfortunate for the average PC, but that doesn't mean they're weaklings by any stretch.

Yep, I meant it in the sense of magic not being all-pervasive and logically inconsistent, the way it's presented in most fantasy roleplaying settings. I mean, everyone you meet having a weapon with a Pompous Name and a host of funky abilities is kewl and all, but if I wanted that I'd just play Earthdawn (my over-the-top action fantasy game of choice) or a Hero Wars variant.

With TROS, I can finally have characters that are actually afraid of getting into fights because they can't heal their wounds quickly, and I can make them scared of sorcery without having to pile on extra levels of Lightning Bolts or whatever. I'm one of those GM's that likes to instill a sense of mortality without actually killing a bunch of PC's.

Regarding getting TROS in the UK. Forbidden Planet London, near Oxford street carry it (although they stock Buffy the RPG too!). And they have a mail order department.

Nice work on the systemm, by the way. Answered the prayers of a DM bored with players decimating whole cultures in search of a next Gold piece or point of XP.

I've heard Call of Cthulhu is a somewhat deadly RPG... it might come close.
