Hey all,

Rattlehead and I have mentioned this a time or two, as has Bob Richter (I believe he coined the phrase OpenRPG folx), but here I go again.

We (Rattle and I) are going to try to put together a play-night on OpenRPG for The Riddle of Steel. Anyone with the time is welcome to come and play.

What you need: OpenRPG
Where you can get it: www.openrpg.com
What it entails: It requires 3 separate downloads, 2 of which are around 16MB, and an install. A bit complicated, but nothing too difficult.

When: Saturday night August 10th at 7pm PST (9 CST, 10 EST)
Where: 'The Riddle of Steel' server on OpenRPG, which I will be hosting.
Why: ...um, because it's fun?

What: up to you all, really. Rattlehead has suggested that I run my Con-game, which is pretty much a demo-style one-shot. If people are not interested in that, we can just run some duels for those who want to try out their characters against each other, or are new to the system, and want to get a feel for how combat works. Either way, I'm game to moderate/Seneschal.

The Demo game:
I'm confident I can run the game for a larger number of players, as it allows for 20 prisoners. I've not run a chat-based game before, but it should be easy enough.

Characters: Characters must be submitted to me at the latest by Saturday afternoon, so that I can look them over. PM me with your character, or e-mail them to me at JeriolKeayn@aol.com

Nationality: Characters must be from the regions/countries of Farrenshire, Angharad or Oustenreich, though I will be flexible if you can come up with a good reason why a given character from elsewhere would be in the area described.

Race: Human and un-Gifted. No sorcerer would allow themselves to be held prisoner, after all.

Social Class: Any, but your characters will be prisoners/slaves, and as such will have no possessions, regardless of their previous station in life.

Gender: up to you. Remember, however, that you are a slave, and are being transported by soldiers... and that 2 out of the 3 games I have run, there has been carnal knowledge by a PC in the first session. You've been warned.

Spiritual Attributes: As this is a one-shot, it would behoove you to choose SAs which will be directly useful to the situation. ie, you're slaves, captured by a Gelurian army, and are being transported back to Gelure where a lifetime of servitude, or worse, awaits you.

Dueling
So long as the character is a beginning character, there are no restrictions on duelists, and they do not need to be submitted prior to Saturday night.

Now, there are the two options, but we need to decide which one it will be prior to Saturday. Those of you who are interested in coming and are able to do so, please respond with your preference of activity, and any requests or questions you might have.

Thanks!

Is custom made stuff allowed?
I'm asking because, if I'm into this(and I must say I'm interested) I plan to use a home made "wanderer" skill set.

How much is required in terms of background history and to which point?(i.e. will you explain how we ended up prisoners or is that up to us).

Wolfen.. this may sound like a stupid question, but.. how long do these things run? I'm interested.. but starting at 10pm can tend to make it rather late once everything has been said and done. Are you intending this to be a one-shot deal.. "go until done?" Or would you handle it in a more episodic fashion?

The wanderer skill packet are for those(suprise, suprise) who travels(not necessarily walks) across the land.
Unlike the Woodsman/ranger, which is geared towards wilderness, this skill set cover the skills of those who wander from inn to inn, including anything you might learn in the inns themselves.

Wanderer:

First aid
Folk lore +1
Gambling
Intrigue +1
Orienteering -1
Riding
Sneak
Streetwise -1
Survival +1
Teamster

I'll be there, if I can make it.

Though, admittedly, the "You're a prisoner" thing's been done here.

Mm. Given that I'm a prisoner, and don't get any equipment, there's no value in a social station higher than F - Prisoner/Slave.

And yet, that would leave me spending an E on my required Humanness.

Oh, Bother.

Well, You'll have my character by August 10th. Now if only I got to Flex my Priorities a little bit...oh well.

By the way, are we ever going to get me running a permanent tRoS server? You never got back to me on that.

Make a halfling, someone who can pass as human. Then you can put that E to good use. :-)

P.S. Angharad=Lotsa Elves. Gotta be some cross-polinization going on there. :-)

Notably why one of my two characters from the region is a halfling. Lance said Human only though.

::looks over the Wanderer Skill Packet:: Yeah, that'll fly. I'll also offer up my own Lawman/Guard skill packet, at the end of this post.

As for background.. Okay, I'll get a little more in-depth. This is a small Gelurian strike force of about 100 mounted men, led by a sorcerer. it is raiding in the tri-country area of Farrenshire, Oustenreich (despite their supposed alliance...) and Angharad. They have captured 20 prisoners in a few days of raiding, and have a few injured soldiers. Thus, the sorcerer in charge decided to detach 15 soldiers with a couple wagons to take back prisoners, wounded, and some of the spoils. The story begins about noon of the day that the sorcerer detached this force.

That's it. The prisoners can have been captured together if they wish to collaborate, but the default is separate. Any other details are yours to make up.

Length: I ran this game twice, and play time was 4.5 hours the first game, and 3 hours the second. I am intending this purely as a one-shot, though if people decide they would like this to become an ongoing thing, I can do that too. However, this game will start out as a one-shot, so a lot of work will not be necessary for the characters.

Bob,

Yes, it's been done. But it's the simplicity of it that decided me to run it at the Con.
As for Social Station: Most of my players chose to be Freemen, with 1 who chose slave, 1 who chose peasant, and one who chose landless nobility. If slave is what you want to choose, have at it. I don't restrict your social class.

If you want to be an un-Gifted halfling, we'll talk. I consider myself a very flexible Seneschal.

Now, the Lawman/Guard Skill Packet:

Body Language +2
Etiquette(street)
Law
Intimidate -1
Streetwise -1
First Aid:-1
Read & Write +2

I think it goes without saying that I'll be running Julianos. Just because the characters begin in cages doesn't mean that they have to be created as slaves. For example, their equipment has most likely been confiscated and carried along by the Gelurois. I think it best that you either use an existing (beginning) character, or create one without taking the starting situation into account. In other words, don't put an F or E into Social status just because they start off as captives. Create the character as he would be "normally".

Prisoner(F) is what I get, whether I chose it or not. Chances are, if my equipment's been confiscated, it's not with the detachment that's bringing me to Gelure, and it's the character's starting social class that matters. For a Prisoner, that's F.

Nope. Don't really want to be a Halfling. Got a character concept in mind. Sure I can't flex my priorities? Can I expand my Minor Flaw to a Major one and expand one of my Minor Gifts likewise?

Um. "No." to any/all of these questions is quite okay.

Ah, yes, sorry another "optional rule" that I do use. The Gifts and Flaws priority is your Zero Value. You can heap up on either side, so long as it balances out to the same number of Gifts you would have gotten from your priority. Flaws, however, I do not limit. You can be as messed up as you want to. I know this allows a greater chance for minimaxing a character, but I've seen it also make for richer characters. I'm trusting that you'll go the latter route.

As for "flexing" I'm not totally sure what you mean, but if it's what I think, then no. Other than the flexibility I allow in Gifts and Flaws, I go by the chargen system as it exists.

Of course, now that I've said that, someone will ask something that will remind me of another tweak that I use... though, seriously, I do believe that's it. For chargen, anyhow.

For the record, I play some things fast and loose to keep things from bogging down, and I play other things very strict. Initiative is often the former, while damage is usually the latter. Also, I will almost never remind you to make a skill check; I've nothing at stake if your skills do not improve, after all. I also use the blow-through rules I posted about here on the boards sometime before. It slows combat a slight amount, but it allows for much nastier wounds, and.. well, hell, I like gore.

Thassit. ::glares at Bob:: Don't make me eat those words, damnit.

You could easily double that length of playing time (or more if you have many players) when playing online using a text-chat method.

At least thats my experience playing HeroWars and RuneQuest on IRC for several years now.

Something else I forgot to mention: I've got certain tools on OpenRPG that I've tailored for use with TRoS. The character sheet tool I'll have to send to you via OpenRPG, but if you've got OpenRPG, PM me with your E-mail address, and I can send you the TRoS die-roller. I will be fiddling with it today to see if I can get the fumble rules to work properly, and should have it fully working by Saturday.
