writer's block: naming a race
I'm having trouble naming a race for my game.
Basically, they are mineral in nature (predominantly silicate, elemental metals, etc.). The core of their being is this crystalline material which stores their "consciousness" and can manipulate/interface with "bioelectric" and psychic energy (which allows them to animate the rest of their physical form). Additionally, they have the ability to shift into different forms (and possibly interface with other technology) if they assimilate some of this crystalline material from another source. So, one might be a small spider-like creature, or maybe a bipedal humanoid, or even a (space) transport ship. Oddly enough, a large part of my inspiration for this race came of the character Nordom from the Planescape: Torment video game. I like the idea of sentient automata.
Anyway, I'm guessing the name that's popping into your head right now is something like "Geomorphs", but stuff like that sounds totally 80s. Besides, this is a race that doesn't make a habit of changing shape. Each usually picks something and then sticks with it. The big thing is that they just don't have a universal or standard form.
So, any suggestions? Thanks.

Vultus - latin for "form"
evidenter - Latin for "clear"
Virsilicis - Latin for "rock man"
resilicis - could mean "rock being"in latin .. res=being - silicis= rock
tribuores - possibly "alloy being" in latin
You could just make something that sounded cool.
Drammon
Aramimdon
Squellic
Rict
Mor
Andeloquin
Grell
Greisha
Panderi
Drow doesn't mean anything... unless you're a geek that is. :)
or kraken for that matter. Geek or not. and who doesn't think Kraken sounds cool?
Good luck
Not at all confident that I helped at all. but I tried.

Thanks, that did help. I'll have to break out my latin dictionary and poke around.

No problem. I just found one online (latin translator). If I hadn't just googled it, I would link it for you. Good luck. If you figure out something that you like and want an opinion post it here for us.

I've found that the easiest way to name a race is to first pick a real-world language to base their language on, then find out what they would be called in that langauge. Some examples of how I've used this process:
Hm, I'm tired of the word dwarf, and my dwarves are different from what people are going to expect anyway. I want them to have a very Germanic, Anglo-Saxon feel. Hey, what's Anglo-Saxon for dwarf? (Look up) Dweorg! Cool! They're the Dweorgen!
Same goes for the elves, don't want all the baggage the term carries. I could call them trow, that's one you don't see often. (Look up to make sure) Huh, trow comes from treow, which is also the root of true and tree. That's great! They, like, consider themselves the only true race and stuff. The Treowan!
Now what about these pseudo-undead guys from the desert? They have a grey skintone, maybe I could call them the Dunnan -- no, too similar to, like, Dunmer and stuff. Wait, these guys come from a totally different region and civilization, they need a different language. Hm... desert -- Arabic! <facepalm> They're the Ghola!
And so on.

Jian is an interesting Chinese word that somewhat fits them. It means "sage" or "sword", depending on how it's pronounced.
