Survival: modern survival horror

Hello, this is my first post here, found out about the site about a week ago and wanted to make sure I did not make any mistakes for posting so I just kind of shadowed a bit. Now onto my real post.

I have been working on a concept called survival. It's set up as a survival horror rpg where the player is just human, no special abilities or anything of the sort. I created a few concepts of the cover just to get a feel for what the game is about.

The front cover, again these are just concepts, probably going to do away with the gradient.

The back cover, all of the text is just place holder but should give you some idea of what it's about.

One of the concepts I'm working with is incorporating an insanity system, where when you experience traumatic events your sanity goes down and eventually you end up having derangement. But its not all bad because you'll start hallucinating and some of those hallucinations can show the "truth"

Now the problems arise when I try to think of what system to use, mainly because the type of game, there is no real fighting and the emphasis is on a creepy story telling vibe, another problem is when players get separated, these are usually important parts in any horror movie or book but if the players are sitting next to each other they know whats happening to everyone, this usually isn't a problem in most rpgs because its "player knowledge" vs "character knowledge" but it takes away some of the suspense in a horror setting.

Thanks for any help you can give and if anyone is interested in making this a collab I would be more then happy.

Hi Arithine,

First off the concept sounds fun.
First off the big question: How complex do you what your system to be?

Some systems that might be worth looking over:

The Basic Role-Playing system the long standing system of Call of Cthulhu, very good system, and very easy to work with.

The EABA system a neat little system that can be easily made into different settings. You can also get a free PDF copy of the system at http://www.btrc.net/files/eabafree/eabalitev10.pdf

You also might what to World of darkness again another simple horror supernatural themed game.

For your insanity system you might what to take a look at Dark Heresy, or Call of Cthulhu both have great mechanics for going nuts. Also I might take you up on your offer, just private message me for further information.

Eric

Hi arithine,

Okay, I presume you've watched some survival horror movies.

Have you asked yourself why you felt fear or tension during the movie? What triggers that? Because just as much as horror movie makers draw on certain technqiues (some a little cliche - "OH, it was just a cat..."), your going to draw upon those techniques in your game design. So what are they, do you think?

i think the fear of the unknown/unseen, and the feeling of weekness and the feeling of being helpless. thats why i want combat to be constrained and insanity so the players dont know if what they are seeing is real. suspense is also a big paet, one of the group is seperated and the rest hear a "bump" the fear would arise with not knowing what happened and if the member is ok or not.

I want it to be complex in terms of freedom for the GM to create their story but the actual play mechanics should not overshadow the atmosphere, if you have to think about statistics then you are drawn away from the setting.

I've played NWoD and loved it but I find it is more action oriented and because you can play as the supernaturals you don't get the fear of the unknown, I will look into Cthulhu though, based on the nature of H.P.s works it would have a good insanity system.
