[Shooting the Moon] Gaining Traits
Hi Elizabeth and everyone,
We (me and Lavinia) have just got a little brain-fart about gaining traits during the hurdle.
The correct sequence is:
1) The First Pool is rolled and the Suitor loses.
2) The Suitor gains a Trait declared by the Opponent.
3) The Suitor open the Second Pool (with or without gaining a Trait).
4) If the Suitor loses again another Trait is assigned.
For a total of 3 possible Traits
or
1) The First Pool is rolled and the Suitor loses.
2) The Opponent propose a Trait (i.e. "Lame").
3) The Suitor open the Second Pool trying to opposing to that Trait.
4) If the Suitor loses again the Trait ("Lame") is confirmed.
For a total of 2 possibile Traits.
We cannot honestly remember how we played before.

Hello! It's Emily here. ;) Thanks again for the questions.
There should be at most 2 traits gained by a given character during a suitor's turn. Often they get only 1. If the Active Suitor and Beloved win, they each get to add one trait to their character. If they lose, the Opponent adds one to each of them.
But if there is a tie, then the Beloved's player adds one to each of the Suitors, and then there is a second trait applied to one of the characters as a result of what is chosen for the Second Pool. If the Opponent's suggestion is taken, one of the characters gets the trait that was suggested. If the Active Suitor and Beloved make up something instead, then the trait they choose is used instead.
So, in case of a tie, there would be three traits since the Beloved gets to add two and then there would be another from the Second Pool. But each character will only get one or two.
However, more may be assigned to a single character during a Beloved's turn since there are a smorgasbord of responses you can make.
Hope that clears things up!
Best,
Em
