This was probably my favorite 90's Ameritoon this side of Batman. I feel it was grossly underappreciated in its day and it is rarely shown now. Needless to say, I wish I had collected it.

For those of you who didn't have cable a few years back, this series was a sequel to the 60's classic Jonny Quest which followed the Quest Foundation into the '90s. Because nobody had bothered doing a seuqel to Jonn Quest until then, Jonny and Hadji are teenagers and joined on their adventures by Jessie Bannon, Race Bannon's illegitimate but still loved daughter.

The characters had developed very nicely from the 60's series. "Race" Bannon's past became the source for several adventures -- evidently he used to work for some spy agency and his old enemies popped up every so often. Jonny had gone from hiding from trouble to facing it, and appeared ready to follow in Race's footsteps as a true adventurer (he certainly had the kick-butt skills for it!). Jonny and Jessie had a very interesting dynamic, almost but not quite a couple but obviously very close. Dr. Quest had developed a virtual reality simulation called Questworld that soon became too dangerous to visit for long when one of Race's archenemies took up permanent residence there. (Now there was a disturbing villain!) And of course Fenton Quest's old nemesis Dr. Tzin was around to cause trouble.

How would one build a CAH series along those general lines?

I admit I've never seen the show (wanted to, never got the chance, and then it was gone). From what I'm hearing, though, it seems like the characters would be like "Dark Brigade" - max of 4 on traits, heavily trait-based characters (possibly in the 80-100 CP range), with gadgets as SAs. Race would have the Story Hook of "Former Spy" at least to Moderate.

Sounds pretty spiffy!

There was a movie that bridged the two series -- "Jonny's Golden Quest", which aired on cable. Jonny was 12 and this was the movie that introduced Jessie Bannon to the cast.

I only got to see the end of it. I want to see the whole thing. And more of Real Adventures.

By the way, don't you just hate it when comedians and other pop-culture smart-alecks assume that any male characters who have a close bond are actually a gay couple and it becomes part of the popular ideology? Race Bannon and Dr. Fenton Quest have very good reasons for having worked together so long in close quarters, just like any partnership in an adventuring setting. But I get very annoyed when everyone assumes things that there's no evidence for. I have several very close male friends, but I'm straight and so are they (either that or they just don't think about sex at all or anymore).

Race and Benton could be gay, could not be gay. As long as they don't show ANY SEX OF ANY KIND BETWEEN ANYONE on the Cartoon Network (Hentainami?), I don't really care.

Actually, the whole Race/Dr. Quest couple angle was parodied on one of the first episodes of Harvey Birdman and was quite entertaining. Personally I couldn't care less about what people say about the possibility of a gay relationship between the two. There have even been those who claim that Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street are gay. Some people just can't handle their own repressed feelings, I guess.

Oh, my favorite Harvey Birdman episode: Fred Flintstone as Tony Soprano. Classic!
