In TROS it states that the weapon length advantage switches once the smaller weapon has dealt a damaging blow.

Let's say Joe has a dagger and Mike has a spear (and plate armor). At the beginning of the battle, Joe has a negative CP modifier because of his dinky weapon. But somehow Joe succeeds in an attack against Mike. However, Mike's plate armor and Toughness blocks all the damage. Does the weapon advantage now go to Joe anyway (i.e., Joe has managed to get inside of Mike's weapon reach), or does Mike keep the advantage, thanks to his plate armor?

Incidentally, I bought TROS recently after visiting the Driftwood web page via a search for Donjon. TROS rules rule! I'm now in a full-court press against my gaming group's GM to get him to drop the cheesy D20 combat system in favor of TROS.

Personally, I rule that if you hit, you get within range, whether you actually do any damage or not.

That's what I figured, too. Gives the knife-fighter more of a chance.

I agree. The fact that you hit him suggests that you managed to get within range. Of course there are special cases, but I think as a rule of thumb, it's ok. Though it isn't quite as logical when trying to increase range.

The best way to increase range (especially when you're talking Spear vs. Dagger and thus -5 on attacks and defenses for the Spear guy while you're in Dagger range) is just to full evade.

Brian.
