Creating Awareness

Well I have a game nearing completion and I'm awful damned proud of it so far. (of course I say that about putting my shoes on the correct feet)
So my question is:
"What are some good methods of creating awareness for MY game?"

The Forge is great..
The News Group are slightly helpful...
What do you guys suggest?

To give the background:

it's going to be available for free as a .pdf
it's a niche game: small town horror

any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

FS,

Trade links with other sites. This is THE main strategy.

Get played by lots of people, via the net or at local cons and stores.

Get reviewed on a variety of sites.

Include art! At this stage, it doesn't have to be plentiful nor does it have to be expensive (opinions on this differ). It does have to be good (opinions on this do not differ).

Avoid silly things like banner ads or ANY other marketing device that does not involve open exchange of effort.

Best,
Ron
